I went to the draft yesterday and we parked right behind one of the kids who didn't get picked. I felt so bad because he had his entire family there.

 

Very glad first day of FA falls on a weekend day this year

I'm really curious on how does the nhl do the draft? Do all the draft eligible kids show up because that feels weird to do that.

I've been thinking of subscribing once the trial period is over. These kinds of well-written articles are way better than the on the surface beat reporting I'm used to (No offense Khan or HSJ).

 

I didn't hate swapping Saad for Panarin because there's no way in hell they're going to be able to afford him in a couple years & Saad's under contract longer, but that Hjalmarsson trade was a joke. Same idea as the Panarin trade but the difference is that Saad is actually good.

 

It's been recommended by a lot of people, wish every place had one

 

Yeah if the Athletic was a league-wide publication I'd absolutely subscribe. I'm tempted already but I'm not invested in Toronto or Detroit

 

Well the more people subscribe to what they have the more they can probably expand

Yeah I'm bitter about losing Hjammer as well. This article (paywall) states that Hjammer's GAR was far better than Murphy's last year, although I do get that Hjammer is probably decline quicker than the average D-man based on his style of play and tons of playoff miles by now.

Saad for Panarin makes sense for exactly what you've mentioned as well. Furthermore, we got a backup goalie out of it when our organization is absolutely barren at the moment with Darling gone.

 

That trade in terms of the goalie portion was perfect because we would have lost him to waivers for nothing had we not traded him. If Motte can either challenge for a bottom six or be a good player for Cleveland at least we got something out of it.

 

The thing that kills me is that moving him makes sense because he's due for a new contract soon & he's going to be negative value going forward. They just targeted/traded for the wrong guy. Defensemen like him have such an easy time fitting in under Quenneville too. Oh wait.

 

I feel like this is going to be the Sharp for Daley trade all over again.

 

Motte's first few games were good, then he got injured a couple weeks in, did pretty bad afterwards, and never made it up from Rockford the rest of the season. I hope he does well.

 

Good for Holzer. Reliable 7th D fill in guy
