It's not that you don't trade AA to address the defense, it's that you don't trade AA in a deal for anything less than a young, top 2 defenseman you can build your team around. The problem is that you're not going to get a return that big for a guy like Athanasiou.

Detroit fans LOVE AA. He is young, he is fast, and he scores really exciting goals. He also was a 4th round pick who can't seem to gain that much ice time on a team that isn't good enough to make the playoffs. What team is going to look at this and want to give up a franchise defenseman for him? And if you're not getting a franchise defenseman, what is the point of making a trade at all right now?

I really fear Ken Holland's plan right now. He wants to be competitive in the new arena, but the Red Wings have SO many things wrong with them, it just doesn't make any sense to trade away a young center with legitimate NHL abilities unless what you're getting back is completely worth it.

 

Hopeful that we can dump Lupul's contract onto VGK before having to pay big money to Nylander/Marner/Matthews. He had his exit physical and didn't pass
