That is correct, but teams can offer other things to players. Example, one team may offer a better shot at breaking the NHL roster than another team. Listening to Sheary talk about signing his first contract on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast last week, he chose Pittsburgh mainly because they were the only team that offered him a guarantee that he would be in the AHL the next season.

Obviously, it's possible that LA was just the best team in the race, but you'd think a young player would go toward the situation that would be best for his future. Of the three teams remaining in the end, Detroit was the team with the weakest defense, thus looking like the easiest team to break into of the 3.

 

Easiest to break into ≠ best for his future. Being trapped on a basement dweller for the next half a decade+ probably sounded off-putting.
