Ohio covers all genres. The Black Keys (my personal favorite because I used to watch them play small shows in Akron all the time), Kid Cudi, Twenty One Pilots, Rascal Flatts, OAR, Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails, Walk The Moon, Relient K, Machine Gun Kelly, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Bone Thugs N' Harmony, John Legend, etc.

I'm probably missing some, but we have many sadness songs to find from Ohioans.

I’m seeing dan Auerbach in a medium size venue in April, pretty exciting since last time I saw him was with the black keys in a arena.

The first time I heard "Mrs. Hippopotamus" and the line "Sandusky summer time is only five minutes away" I was like WTF. Almost instantly understood that it must be the name of a town / city / area of Ohio but goddamn what an awful turn of phrase / luck for Relient K and Ohio to have the same name as that monster.

Good music does come from FL sometimes though. In general the state sucks, if that’s what you mean I agree

It's just really hard to suspend disbelief and assume genuineness from such a pretentious jackass haha. He has some good songs but a lot of it is meh.

I interpret it more like, he's not comfortable sharing his real feelings anywhere except his music. He puts on an asshole face in public as a shield to guard his sensitive / depressed side. Especially makes sense when you hear in his storytelling about the brusque / abusive way his father raised him.

Yeah, I've seen artists who are coping and come off as pretentious or like an asshole. They, universally, do not double down on their own shitty behavior. Also I just despise arrogance and pretentiousness to my core so if you're gonna be holier than thou you better be able to back it up, which he doesn't. And even then I don't like supporting that kind of behavior. He also does that thing in songwriting when it's clear he wrote a line just so it can rhyme but it doesn't really flow.

The best thing he ever did was give Phoebe Bridgers the material to cover his originally kind of weird track. Fight me irl.

In what way is he holier than thou

I never see a sanctimonious sort of attitude from him. He’s very straightforward about his flaws and vices. I just see a middle aged dude who’s been semi-famous for a long time who is tired of dealing with people / trying to make himself palatable for the public eye? Haha

Considering you are someone who loves the Ron Swanson character in Parks & Rec, and thinks Belicheck’s media persona is “perfect”... I am surprised you dislike those same ornery “not trying to please anyone” traits in Mark Kozelek.

His lyrics are really different in general. I like the stream of consciousness storytelling because his images are so spot on, and he creates a mood with the small details he chooses to include.

Some of his lines may seem unimportant / irrelevant to the story but he’s always setting a scene and I like that.

I can see why his writing would drive an English major and a writer nuts. He rarely sticks to a pentameter or pattern, and it’s not high level prose either.
