If he threw it higher / farther it would have gone out of bounds. He had to give his WR a chance. The corner dove upward and extended one hand out and barely got it with his fingers.

It was closer than you guys are making it sound. It was a great PBU more than it was a bad pass. 4th and 14 is just a really tough hole to be in, it usually requires a defender to make a mistake in order to convert.

We have plenty of other legit ways to criticize Bortles haha... but that throw really wasn’t bad, Westbrook would’ve had just enough space to get both feet in. If anything it was thrown late.

 

Not when the sideline limits how far you can throw it.

Perhaps he should have thrown earlier and thus had more space to arc the ball. Bortles is still pretty slow compared to actual good QB when making decisions.

 

Neither of these things are true.

He could've actually arc'd the ball and led Westbrook. He had room.

 

It was pretty cool to see that pass breakup in real time. Looked like one of those Madden plays they show in ads for the game that actually happens in the game

This. It’s just really hard to hit a 6’0” guy on the sideline with a corner right behind him. The arc has to be EXACT.

 

I disagree. You can’t just look at the arc, because a pass with a higher arc also takes longer to get there. It’s not like the WR would have been in the same spot with a better arc on the ball. Westbrook would have been much closer to the sideline if not out of bounds by that point.

It was a late throw. For the time that it was thrown, it really couldn’t have been placed that much better.

 

Not that late is any better than inaccurate haha

 

Westbrook was running up the sideline with probably two yards between him and the out of bounds line. Bortles 100 percent should've led him more. He would've beaten the safety. Bad throw.

 

Especially when it's both!

 

We call him and tell him to F off. His whole schtick is douche. The only ones I like are Toucher and Rich, Zolak because he's an unashamed homer and at least he owns that and Michael Holley.

 

I’m just more so annoyed that Bortles had to face 4th and 14 because of Hackett’s playcalling. I’m not gonna act surprised our below average QB missed a high level throw haha.

Bortles has earned the 5yr/100M contract. Just give it to him already.

 

But you’re criticizing a part of the game that we weren’t likely to succeed regardless. It’s a silly thing to focus on / criticize in a game that should have been much easier to finish than that ugly 4th and 14 situation.

We didn’t lose because Bortles can’t convert 4th and 14, that’s just ridiculous. I was more so impressed we almost converted it. 99% of the time a team that has to get 4th and 14 to stay in the game, will lose on that play.

We lost long before that and he slightly underthrew a lottery chance at getting back in the game. I’m not mad about that play. I’m more mad about 20-30 other things in that game than that play.

It wasn’t even that bad of a pass though. Hyperfocusing on a barely missed 4th and 14 play is stupid. 25 of the 32 QB in the NFL would miss that throw.

Stephon Gilmore is very good at disrupting the catch point, especially when it’s a sideline pass to a guy shorter than him.

Especially if its only like $25-30mil guaranteed (all 2018+19 salary + signing bonus). Basically a 2yr deal with ~6-7mil cap hit if they cut him before year 3

Since they owe him $19.5mil next year anyway
