A good QB is more valuable than a great RB, I really don't even think this is arguable.

Not sure what this actually means overall. Doesnt sound like "new GM" so much as "different person with final say"

First, I'd argue getting a player out of the box is far more helpful for the run than getting a player into the box is for the pass. I don't think it's an equal effect. And I'd also point out that passing well is far more important than running well.

In fact, if you look at only the points at or above the 10-win line, where the playoff teams typically reside, the graphs tell very different stories. Teams with 10 or more wins are no more likely to have strong running games than weak or even extremely weak running efficiency. In contrast, the teams with at least 10 wins are far more likely to have had above-average passing efficiency. . .
Right away we can see that passing efficiency is the most important aspect of performance. At first glance it's three times as important than running efficiency. But that's before we factor in interception rate, which when added on top of passing efficiency makes passing over four times more important.

Counter point Id make to that is how it simplifies the offensive reads if there are 8 in the box instead of 6 or 7. It basically forces man coverage on the outside at minimum. But I agree with the essence of the rest. Gurley, on the same amount of runs, got 500 more yards and 7 more TDs because he wasnt seeing 9 in the box.

Sean McVey should be coach of the year for what he got from Goff and Gurley in comparison to last year.

Its amazing how being on TV talking about the game gets you so much more consideration that actual success. Louis Riddick was a middling scout/pro personnel guy for some bad teams, gets on ESPN, now he might become a GM?

Passing numbers are situational though. If you are facing a lot of long third downs and not taking stress off your conversion rate, the passing numbers are going to drop almost in direct correlation. So in a way rushing success indirectly contributes to the point this section of the article makes to begin with. A team that can’t run well, has to play quarterback so much better to have the same efficiency, and dissect a defense that is expecting downfield throws. If anything this stat just tells you that elite QBs succeed regardless, which we knew already.

So even though yeah, bad teams can run well and still be bad teams... the reason why a lot of good teams pass well is because their running game opens it up in the first place. A good rushing team can do the bare minimum in the passing game and spend half their time throwing checkdowns & screens, and still put up efficient passing numbers even if their QB is below average. That passing efficiency stat can be misleading if you look at it in a vacuum, and don’t give outside factors like the running game any credit for the QB having an easier job.

It’s a chicken-or-Egg argument. Passing well is more important looking at raw statistics... but the variety of options a quarterback has without a good running game shrinks dramatically and you’re a lot less likely to get those good passing numbers in turn. The rushing attack’s impact on game flow is often indirect because situational down and distance is where the running game can help you, even if your YPC isn’t great.

In some respects, applying your running game at the right times, and being consistent about it throughout the game, can be more important than having explosive runs that raise YPC - I guess the gist of what I’m saying is situational efficiency is different from overall/average efficiency and that’s where the running game becomes more important. For example, Marcus Mariota has thrown more INT than TD and in general has been highly inefficient... but they win games anyway because they don’t get a lot of penalties that back them up, and his legs and Henry’s legs behind a good OL give him a lot of easy 3rd and 2s.

  19. Cam Newton had 9 games of a RAT of 71 or lower. When he is bad he is AWFUL. And it's happening every other game.

    24th in QBR
    24th in YPG
    21st in YPA
    28th in PCT

Agreed. Seems the Cowboys have that logic backwards though. Dak didn't look so good without his great rb.

  21. Cam Newton in 2016:

    30th in PCT
    22nd in YPA
    21st in YPG
    28th in QBR

Two years in a row he's been bad more than good.

DeShone Kizer aspires to get there:

    32nd in PCT
    29th in YPA
    28th in YPG
    28th in QBR
    32nd in QB Rating
    Leader in INT

Most of these included guys behind him who had 200 less pass attempts. He was pretty much the worst.

Bortles stats were alright but that’s misleading, he hasn’t played well when we’ve had to actually rely on him. Seahawks game was the only game we won specifically because of Bortles playing well.
