Chad Morris is the guy to keep an eye on for A&M.

You think so? That'd be very exciting too. I like Morris. I'm high on Martin though too.

I really don't think we're fucked at all honestly. I'm still bothered by everything that happened, but I'm glad that they've been removed from the team. MSU looks solid so far honestly, and I do trust Dantonio to right the ship this year. It wouldn't be the first time we had a shitty season and rebounded in a big way.

I guess it's hard when dantonio did so much for them not too long ago and maybe one of their best coaches ever?

It depends on how SMU finishes, but Morris is an A&M alum and I think he's always had his sight set on that job.

I meant your fucked in the sense that you are pretty much stuck competing for fourth with Indiana for the foreseeable future.

Tee Martin is the forgotten Tennessee legend. Which is kinda hilarious considering he's the one who won the Natty and not Peyton.

Recruiting wise, yeah, more than likely. But Dantonio's done a good job getting good players that aren't high star recruits. I'm still relatively optimistic about the future, but I'm also not setting my expectations super high with where our ceiling will realistically be.

Im completely at a loss with this. I didnt think it could get worse than that, but this wins. we shouldve been more talented this year. what a terrible gameplan, they shouldve stopped trying to do those long developing pass plays and dink and dunked clemson to death. instead we keep trying to take these deep shots and Stidham kept getting drilled because the o line is awful.

As a lifelong ND fan, I am still hesitant to fire Kelly. I thought he became a prisoner to being loyal to his staff at times (Longo and Van Gorder are the obvious names), and I think that set him back on the field. I also think he got caught up in doing less physical recruiting and doing more media/boosters/board of trustee-related events that also took time away from the team. I think it all came to a head last year with a 4-8 record. I think the hires and adjustments Kelly made were all very good. Elko, Balis, and Lea were really good hires imo. Moving Elston back to DL makes sense and seems to working with that group. I think Kelly has done enough good things since taking over that he deserves to see what can be done with a largely new regime around him. Losing a winnable game at home to UGA is tough, but I think ND fans need to also realize how young this team is for the most part. There is a general lack of game experience at some of the most crucial positions. Add in the recruiting job to retain last year's class and what the forecast looks like, and I just find it hard to move on. A lot would need to go wrong for me to change that stance and some really intriguing names would need to make it known through the media and agents that they are interested. And that's a whole separate topic of who you would actually want to replace Kelly with. It's easy to say in the moment to fire Kelly, but realistic options for the ND job is a whole separate piece of it.

Notre Dame could probably get any coach in the country with its reputation and the talent that regularly goes through there.

I think in a vacuum, yes, ND is still viewed by some coaches as one of the top jobs. But ND is not what it used to be in terms of its standing. A lot of it is self-inflicted with the academic standards and the curriculum for all athletes. Also, the out-of sports obligations is a big undertaking. I think Kelly got a win with NBC this offseason, although it wasn't all him. I just think a lot of the top coaches don't view the pay relative to the job as worth it. There is a reason ND hasn't gotten the best available coaches in their recent searches. You don't get total control like you would at an OSU, USC, Bama, etc, but you still have to do the out of sport commitments of one. The pay for the head coach has been improved lately, but the assistant pay is still below what it should be for a top tier program. Plus, you have a totally different approach to academics that only Stanford rivals in terms of the football expectations and school approach. And even then, Stanford football is only on ND's level for the recruiting piece of it. They don't have as strict of requirements as ND for the student athletes once they are enrolled. I think when Urban turned ND down the second time by asking for a bunch of concessions he knew the school wouldn't make, kind of said it all. I think ND has made a choice without outright saying it that they may not get another title in favor of their academics. I don't disagree with that choice either. A lot needs to go ND's way for them to make it into the playoffs, let alone the championship. I think they are pretty close to being a consistent 10 win team and I am totally fine with that as the expectation. I think this season is tricky because the schedule and team is pretty fragile. I think things can totally break for them one way or the other.

Michigan and Florida thought they could get any coach too, that narrative is ridiculous. There are better jobs by far.

Michigan got the head coach of an NFL team that recently went to the Super Bowl.

Literally the only higher pedigree of coach is one that recently won the Super Bowl.

Outside of Alabama, what program really can pull anyone? We thought it was USC, but they had to settle for their interim.

Texas, Virginia Tech, and Oregon may have something to say.

I think Texas is the only one of those thats even close. Virginia Tech got a coach from Memphis, and Oregon settled for their OC then got Taggart, who's a good coach, but not an all time great or anything. FSU might be up there. Clemson would be up there is Dabo decided to leave. Texas A&M has the money and facilities to pull anyone.

I just feel like we have a very different definition of pull. Justin Fuente was one of the best coaches on the market. Oregon has assembled one of the best assistant staffs in the country. Shit, I'd throw LSU in there too. Notre Dame isn't hiring Buck James from UTEP is what I'm saying. They will contend for the biggest names out there.

I guess "out there" is the big factor. Seems these large buyouts are keeping schools from poaching coaches like they used to.

Agree to disagree, like we usually do, brother.

Also, I echo Joe's thoughts on MSU. They'll be fine in the future. The thing with someone like Dantonio -- and coaches like him -- are that the floor for his teams are quite low. He's got to hit on every kid he brings in because there aren't the top-end talent guys behind anyone who fails. That's why I will always argue that, all things equal, I'd rather have the great recruiter than the great tactician. But, I think MSU will be fine come Lewerke's senior year and he rebuilds back up that depth. They're just very depleted at the moment.
