Plus, they didn't have Chapman production the whole season.

I still feel like the difference between the top relievers is so so so small. Same with the difference between a top reliever and an average reliever. It doesn't feel that big.

That's what they want you to think by refusing to spend anything for him. He said he really wants to stay, maybe he would take less than a ridiculous deal but you might have to wait to find out and that's part of why you do it. They raised the prices by like 20% and dont wanna spend, back to the old days. At least you got your ring.

I guess just to maybe be a little bit more clear -

I don't think the difference between Chapman, Jansen, Melancon, Davis, etc is that big. I think, for the most part, it's splitting hairs in determining who is best, so I don't think there's really any drop off from Chapman to Davis, if that's what ends up happening with the Cubs.

And when I look at the numbers, it's hard for me to be convinced that Chapman is so much better than Davis (or any other reliever).

Moreover, even if Chapman was willing to play for literal peanuts instead of 80 million, I still don't want him on the team. I think there are better ways to use 80 million dollars as it pertains to player acquisition and added worth to a ball club, but also Chapman is a shit human being and I don't want to watch him pitch.

Unless I missed something, I haven't heard anything about ownership signaling that they don't want to spend. Most likely it's that Theo and co. don't deem Chapman (or Fowler) worthy of such money (they aren't but for different reasons). If they're going to spend, it's going to be in a smart way.

And that's why I think the Cubs getting Wade would be a big deal. It would give an already good team a good closer for a full season, and likely going forward. I get KC has to deal a little bit bc they can't keep everyone who is up after this season, but I was really hoping the Cubs would not find a way to fill that position with a top tier closer.

    The rivalry is back on

Yeah, I meant more at the time of the trade than now, but that might even still stand. Moncada is definitely a better piece than Swanson, even though they're both blue chip prospects, but Blair and Kopech were pretty similarly ranked prospects at the time of trade and Inciarte is a whole lot better return than the two mid level prospects the White Sox got back.

All that to say that I'm surprised that's the best CWS could get and they didn't hold out for more, considering it's a comparable (but probably slightly better) haul to what ATL got for a guy who was generously a high end #2 starter.

Good lord am I glad they waited. Mookie needs to be the face of the franchise going forward.

Not to mention both he and Benintendi have already played well at the big league level. Moncada might be amazing but that's never a guarantee and he looked atrocious in his call-up.

The Diamondbacks were roundly mocked for giving up so much for Miller. It didn't set a new bar for the White Sox to hold teams to because everyone agreed that ARI overpaid.

The Red Sox are definitely lucky they didn't go over the top trying to win one more for Ortiz last year. If they dealt Benintendi OR Betts that would've been stupid. Sure Moncada will be great but you've seen what those two can do.

Fangraphs projects that there is a 25% chance he is a 20+ WAR guy. Basically he projects more likely to be really good than anything bad.
