    Back From The Dead Prestigious

Completely tragic. I loved watching him play, he was a true talent and deserved to be a star player. Seeing all the players and fans from other teams express their condolences really drives the point home that we're all in this together, we may talk trash or be rivals to each other but this is the game we all love together in the end. RIP Jose, you'll be greatly missed.

Ortiz asked the Rays to cancel his farewell ceremony today and honor Fernandez instead, and is wearing "JF 16" on his hat. I'm sure touching stuff like that will be happening all over baseball today, but it really hit home for me.

  12. after his AB last night, im fairly certain pedroia has ascended to superhumanity and has gained the power to always do exactly what needs to be done to win the game

Jose Iglesias was scratched from today's lineup after the Jose Fernandez news. He just pinch hit a ground rule double.

It's always been Pedroia's rep that he's the guy who does whatever it takes for the team to win, but this is just ridiculous.

Reading all of this now is making me so emotional. Jose Fernandez was such a good pitcher, and such an amazing person. Dude is barely older than me and he lost his life. It's so sad. Baseball, and the entire world, lost someone really great today.

I don't tend to go on Facebook or online during the day on weekends. So my wife said "That's horrible what happened to that baseball player." I said, "Who?" "Hernandez I think, maybe Fernandez? He plays for the Marlins."

I said, "Jose Fernandez?" and she replied yes. I thought he got caught with PEDs, was injured in a big way... something "sad". She told me he died, and my jaw dropped and I practically yelled "WHAT?!"

It was just a shattering reaction. I'm not a Marlins fan, but I'm a Mets fan and have seen him enough - and seen him playing everyone else - to know he seemed like an absolute hell of a person.

That clip of him and Tulo from a few years back is one of my favorite things from sports in a long time. He obviously had a blast playing in the MLB, and didn't conform to the "unwritten rules" and old boys' club mentality. And I loved that. Combine that with the fact that he was simply fantastic (and his personal backstory) and, well, this is an absolute gut punch.

My favorite team, in the middle of a wild card race, won 17-0 today. Not against a good team, sure, but still : 17-0. And I couldn't bring myself to watch the game on replay, because I didn't want to hear about Fernandez, and seeing Cespedes hanging up a Fernandez jersey in the dugout (I'm not sure if that happened pre-game or not - I wasn't going to risk it) would have absolutely broken me down.

    Just... FUCK. Ugh.

just got the best team money can buy book by molly knight at Barnes and Noble.

I saw a lot of love for it through Dodgers blogs and twitter follows so it seems like a nice read.
