I'm sorry but this answer still doesn't do it for me. Winning players make sacrifices, if he wasn't promised the full-time catching gig (which I've heard conflicting reports about that) that's no reason to not go to a winner especially in this day and age where every day catchers are becoming more rare for a long period of time. Most good offensive catchers eventually move to 1B or OF or DH (in the AL). If he REALLY cared about winning a world series, he wouldn't care where in the field he played. You're already on a losing team, dude. Who are you to tell other teams which position you're going to play...next year.

Also, Yan Gomes has been terrible offensively for two straight season. Like, beyond dreadful. So the competitor in Lucroy should have thought 'I'll just beat him out at catcher' in 2017. I find it very hard to believe that the Indians are guaranteeing starting jobs to players for next season, especially those who are underperforming. What kind of message would that send to other players on the team?

Also, Gomes is VERY injury prone. Most likely out for the rest of this year and who knows what will happen next year. It's not like he'd be playing behind Cal Ripkin.

I still think it's a cheap excuse just to not want to play for Cleveland. I mean, he had them on a no-trade clause for a reason. I would have rather him come out and say 'look, I didn't want to play for Cleveland. I had them on a no-trade list for a reason and I'm exercising my right."

Seeing as he is only 25, I have no clue why they would be interested in moving him, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.

I'm not so quick to give this guy his praises for how he is going out. He said before this season started that he would be retiring after the 2017 season. He was already prepping his 2017 celebration tour, but he's been forced into this move because of his terrible play this year, and even now he's not just hanging it up. What's the point of playing through this week?

At this point he wants something guaranteed and he didn't get it. It's in his rights to veto a trade because of his contract. Also just because you're the better option at a position means the team will go with that. If that was the case Jeter would have moved to third for A-Rod

Also people realize that A-Rod was cut right. The Yankees just let it happen on his terms out of respect for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in another uniform next year.

I mean, athletes in any sport on any team should know that NOTHING is guaranteed to them, especially for next year. Anything can happen, injuries, trades, free agency. Indians also have a team option on Santana and a decision to make on Napoli. Both I'm assuming the Indians would love to have back, but nothing is guaranteed. That all affects Lucroy but it's impossible to get those answers right now.

It's silly to make that kind of demand when everyone's goal is winning a World Series right now. There's also MANY reports out there that Lucroy and his team demanded that the Indians rip up the team option, which would have been beyond silly. Didn't see that in Lucroy's letter because it obviously makes him look bad.

I agree about the part it's within his rights. He should have just said that and left it alone.

FUCKIN SAVAGES IN THAT FUCKIN BOX Prestigious

I'm sure he does have four home runs in him. I hope he realizes how bad he's looked for a calendar year. I'm two hours from New York so I've heard all the fans say "well how's he going to hit without the at-bats?" but I think he's had a long enough look. Maybe a team like the Rays who is pretty much guaranteed to be awful next year picks him up (God knows they could use a reason for people to attend.) I don't think Alex can admit how bad he looks playing-wise, I doubt he could resist if someone wants him, this year or next. Four away from 700 though, it's hard to blame him.

He was getting shit on and made out to be the bad guy in the deal. Don't blame him
For giving his side. When you get out of the mindset of fantasy baseball and realize this guy is a real person having control of where you get traded and in a situation is a big deal. Imagine if tomorrow your employer told you have been traded to another company and you have 5 days to show up at a new company in a completely different city. If you could have some control of what that is you would want it.

    The rivalry is back on

Well sure, but exercising the clause also comes with the consequence of the Indians and their fans being upset with you, even though he felt it was in his best interest to do so.

Imagine you are one of the 3 best people in the country at your job, but your company tells you that they are sending you to another company in a different state, because their current person that does your job is absolutely terrible, but that new company isnt going to guarantee you that you get to keep your position next year, they kind of want to keep the really bad guy doing it because he has been with the company longer, and they are paying him way more money. You also got a say in not going to this company, wouldnt you turn that down and say send me to another company that is doing just as well as them?

    The rivalry is back on

I absolutely would, in a heartbeat. The new company and their stakeholders would probably be upset when I took the same offer from one of their biggest competitors though, and that's a consequence of my decision. That's all I'm saying. I don't think he's in the wrong though.

  14. This isn't reality, though. Cleveland was not going to trade one of their best prospects and two other semi-intriguing guys to play one of the very worst hitters in franchise history (this season at least) over one of the very best all-around catchers in the game. (oh and Yan Gomes will not be paid more than Lucroy next season, but facts and logic apparently don't matter in this story)

No teams guarantee starting positions for future seasons. That's asinine. Injuries happen. Surprise players explode onto the scene. Players fall off a cliff.

All he needs to say is that he took a gamble because he and his family would be more comfortable in Texas. Perfectly reasonable. Anything else is just bullshit, face-saving spin.

Whatever way you want to spin it, Lucroy made the right decision.

No offense, but what a ridiculous analogy. This is sports. Trades happen daily. People get cut, people get signed, people leave for different teams every day.

Oh, and Lucroy PUBLICLY stated he wanted out of Milwaukee in the winter time and requested to be traded. So it's not like he was blind-sided by a trade.

Only people upset at him at Indian fans. Everyone else could give two shits. Also how many trades have been vetoed that no one ever cares about. You hear about it all the time that a player vetoes a trade to a team. Maybe it's just before anything to serious happens and this was all but official.

If the Braves could land a power hitting corner outfielder via trade, they'd do it. I don't see them moving Kemp (or being able to move him bc of all that money). You would think Mallex is here to stay for a long time. So that makes Inciarte available. Not saying they should trade him, but it wouldn't be totally irrational if they are able to get what they wanted in the OF.

With that said, I think there's no way Markakis is starting RF for the Braves next year. They're gonna do everything they can to move him.

I'd be content with a Kemp, Mallex, Inciarte outfield. But it could be miles better than that if the right deals are made. Gotta get some power in this lineup if they're gonna be a better team.

My bad, I thought he was paid 5.9 million next year, but that is in 2018, and then increases up until 11 million in his last year of the contract.

We do? Players vetoing trades is not that common...

  21. Even that 11 mil option looked like it was gonna be a steal when he signed the contract. He's fallen off a cliff into the ocean into the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
