no issue with the trade. The Cubs knew that this was potentially the one thing that could hurt them and they have all the pieces to win it all....they have to do what they can to do so. And this doesn't hurt them in the next 2-3 years either.

and it's a win for me because he's not on the Nats mwuhaha pappelbum

I'm sure they'll trade for someone, just someone not as good. Yankees are also basically making anyone available now, they have Hal's blessing... Wonder if that changes anything. Bless cashman for convincing him, must've been a giant pain in the ass.

Edit: Rashad Crawford was the fourth player from the Cubs in the deal. He'll probably be up soon just to steal bases and be "exciting" lol

    TW: Domestic violence

Aroldis Chapman should not be on an MLB team. I know he served his suspension. The suspensions should be harsher. Fuck him, fuck the fact that he's celebrated and this incident has become "personal issues" or an "off the field incident" in most coverage and discussion of him, the same way athletes smoking marijuana or owning weapons is talked about. He has shown no responsibility or acknowledgement for the gravity of what he did.

    Fuck. Him.

Really not bothered by the prospects going to NYY. I hope they do well, but we have a solidified base of on-field talent for the next few years and we still have a farm system. It's hard to get worked up over a 19 year old middle infielder.

I was really excited about Adam Warren with the Castro trade, but he's been bad. I wish he wasn't a part of this trade, but it makes sense and I'm not too bothered.

I think there's a phenomenom of sorts these last few years where fans crave and dream of prospects, shooting down any ideas of making the MLB team better by trading those prospects. The Cubs are at a point where it makes sense to leverage prospects in order to make the MLB team better. The Cubs position players are young and locked up long term. There will be questions about what to do if/when Fowler leaves, but that's doable. The biggest question mark going forward was always starting pitching, which was probably not going to be solved by anyone in the farm system, which is mostly because of Theo and Jed's methods of drafting high on hitters (who are more likely to pan out), and acquire pitching through free agency or trades.

I trust Theo, Jed, & co. The biggest concern right is not with the prospects being sent, but with Chapman's behavior towards his partner.

For what its worth hes had no trouble here at all. Different then a monster like Greg hardy who wasn't contrite and just walked from the criticism rather than sincerely apologizing. Not saying what might have happened is okay, never is.

Now Reyes and chapman dont play in the same state anymore

    The rivalry is back on

The Yankees buying low & selling high on Chapman is the smart business/baseball move or whatever, but I don't like that it's incentivized so that a team can directly profit off of domestic violence like that.

This is my first season actively following baseball but prospect talk and analytics talk gets me so confused. I barely know like the top 5 Dodger prospects so just hearing about other teams prospects is a bit much.

also I'm still slowly trying to learn all the analytics side off baseball since all I really know is the basics so hearing these stats on MLB Network through me off big.

If you ever have questions or want some resources, I'm certain that others here and myself would be more than willing to help out! It can be hard diving into really understanding OPS+, ERA+, FIP, wOBA, etc etc, as well as knowing about prospects and farm systems.

Honestly, if this is your first season really paying attention to baseball, I suggest just sticking with the main stats. Get familiar with what a good ERA, WHIP, BA, OBP, and counting stats are. Yes, some counting stats are flawed, but without an understanding of the counting stats, its going to be really hard to understand the advanced stats.

Prospects are a different breed. 15 years ago, there wasnt nearly as much hype around them. There were the top ones, but people werent familiar with the top ten for each team like they are today. My words of advice on those would be never trust a pitching prospect, dont expect a prospect to hit like Correa, Seager, let alone like Trout or Harper when they came up for good. Get to know your teams prospects and maybe join a fantasy league next year to get a better understanding of some stats, players and prospects.

Pretty good indication that they'll have a shot to get him back this off season.

The more I think about this trade, the more it bothers me.

It feels as though these prospects could've been better used to trade for a piece or pieces that contribute more than a rental closer who will pitch maybe 30-40 innings.

This is a great window of opportunity to win the WS, but the playoffs is such a crapshoot and I'd prefer to use prospects to widen the window of opportunity for years to come, perhaps by trading for a SP with years of team control.

Chapman is as elite as they come, but trading prospects for relief pitching, especially a rental, seems foolhardy. Prospects for starting pitcher would be better.

I'm not sure who they could have gotten that fits the bill. A cost controlled SP with years of team control is going to cost a team many prospects/major league ready talent. If the Cubs went after someone that fit those parameters you are looking at trading Soler/Scwharber/Baez potentially. The Chapman deal is a good deal for the team, it solidifies the pen which the team will need for the playoffs, and they gave up a low level top prospect that is blocked at every position in the IF.

Well, that kind of move for a cost-controlled SP doesn't need to happen now; it can wait until an opportunity is presented. The Chapman deal has upside, of course, but I'm wary of such a prospect load for a rental closer.

  15. I agree and I disagree. I disagree because it literally gives you a massive leg up on almost every team you'll face in the playoffs come late innings with a guy like Chapman on the mound. But I agree with the sentiment too because... look at Familia last year. Lights out. Incredible year. And yet he blew three games in the World Series. So yes, you can't guarantee yourself wins by grabbing a rental/elite closer... but you give yourself a huge leg up and I guess that's all they could really do.

Gleybar Torres isn't that great, hes also only 19. If he starts slugging .500 and his average goes up too, than you can be sad. Also assuming you dont at least make the world series that is..

Projecting minor league guys is hard, its exciting but really hard. At least you know what you have and there's a good chance you can sign him.

Thanks! I think I'll stick with the basics just for this season.

also thanks for all the info. I'll do as you suggest and stick to the basic this season. I've been mostly following a Dodgers SB Nation site for most of my prospect stuff. It also helps that Fresno Grizzlies are here so I see Astros prospects anytime I want. I am actually thinking of doing fantasy baseball next season. I have a co-workers who always talks to me about it.
