2016 Mid-Year Album Lists Thread • Page 5

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by DarkHotline, May 29, 2016.

  1. I'll add Radiohead and Death Grips to my list of Deftones and Parquet Courts.

  2. I had no idea about that until I read some promo right before the EP was released.

I saw a video a few weeks ago of him making his Opry debut. It's awesome that he's finding a new level of success as a songwriter and performer. I always thought he had the talent deserving of a much wider audience.

I feel like more and more of these people who find their first success writing songs for other artists are going to start finding success in their own right. Glad he seems to be on that path.

  5. 1. The Hotelier - Goodness
    2. Kanye West – The Life of Pablo
2.5 Cymbals Eat Guitars – Pretty Years
    3. Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool
    4. Chance the Rapper – Coloring Book
    5. Pinegrove – Cardinal

    7. Tegan and Sara – Love You to Death
    8. Weezer – Weezer (The White Album)

Top half is very solid, the bottom half waivers but I'm sure the second half of 2016 will pick up and it'll be as tough as always to narrow the year down to 10 releases come December

I was kind of meh on it at first, but I'm seeing them in two weeks so I wanted to listen to it a lot. It really grew on me, it's probably a top 5 thrice record for me now. Once I realized that stay with me was about a post apocalyptic romance I realized there was a lot more to the record than I originally thought.

I've checked out quite a bit of music from this year (well, relative to how much I generally get into around this time for the past few years). That said, not much has stood out for me yet. Maybe some of the records that I've gotten in the past month or so will end up appealing to me more, maybe some stuff that I was digging earlier in the year but ended up not having much staying power will return with a vengeance, but as of now I'd say that I really like a lot of stuff from this year, but don't really love anything.

In terms of just sheer rotation I think my favourite so far this year is The Falcon's Gather Up the Chaps. I've been playing it pretty consistently since I first checked it out. Compare that with Brian Fallon's Painkillers, Kendrick's untitled unmastered, or Sam Means' 10 Songs which I was listening to a lot earlier in the year but haven't given much time to the past couple months. Same goes for The Life of Pablo and even Lemonade and Chance's Coloring Book - lots of plays when they first came out, followed by a quick drop-off.

Pinegrove is probably my AOTY. I've spun that the most. Hotelier is great, Chance is great and surprisingly I've come back to Weezer a lot. Others I enjoyed:
    Hinds
    Bowie
    Future
    DJDS
    The 1975
    Postiljonen
    Kendrick
    Anderson .Paak
    ANOHNI
    James Blake
    Radiohead
I really haven't even given a lot of them on the list too many listens. I need to get in my new music grind, threw a bunch of albums on Apple Music today so we'll see what sticks out
