Damn I forgot Zootopia came out this year....such an interesting animated film. Not only does it have heart, but the subtle race/inequality theme is fantastic to see in a movie marketed for children.
My friend and I compiled a not-too-serious list of our favorite TV shows of the year, figured I'd post here in case anyone wanted to take a look. :) Van and Paul’s Top 20 TV Shows of 2016 — Part Two (#1–10) Feat. Special Guest Mark Duplass!
Surprised Manchester by the Sea and Elle are missing from the Reverse Shot list, but it's a pretty amazing selection. This is the first of their lists where I've seen everything I've had the chance to. Silence is the only one I'm missing but it hasn't opened in Toronto yet.
Manchester by the Sea is probably too light on the heavier themes for them. Everything on the list that I have seen made my list. Most of the rest has been stuff I have been waiting for.
I watched Elle. Between this and Things To Come, Isabelle Huppert has had quite a year, even though I didn't love either film. Still, I found it compelling in its complexity. Was unsure of how to interpret it or if there even was a way it was supposed to be interpreted, but oh well.
Jackie, The Neon Demon, and Midnight Special Highlight Reverse Shot's 11 Offenses of 2016. 11 Offenses of 2016
I never would have imagined that Reverse Shot would stump for Dirty Grandpa. I guess I have to see it now.
There's been quite a few people emerging with praise for it. I know Peter Labuza is one of them. I'm kind of curious about it.
Realize I'm pretty late to the party here, but figured I'd throw my two cents in while it's still kinda sorta relevant... My favorite films of 2016, in chronological order... Deadpool Captain America: Civil War The Lobster Belladonna of Sadness The Little Prince Hell or High Water Moonlight Elle Manchester by the Sea Silence Aaaannnddd the Worst... The Forest Zoolander 2 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice X-Men: Apocalypse The Legend of Tarzan Batman: The Killing Joke Suicide Squad Yoga Hosers Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Honorable Mentions to... Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: This movie got the shit kicked out of it, and I can't say it's entirely undeserved. It's a haphazard, unwieldy mess of a movie. But at the same time, it has individual moments that I thought were quite powerful. The Greasy Strangler: You can't say it's forgettable!
