It appears they view Vasilevskiy as the long term solution. Bishop has one year left on his contract. Which means in the expansion draft they'd have to expose Vasilevskiy. So they trade Bishop and then sign a backup to a multi year deal. This ensures they don't lose Vasilevskiy.

 

It looks like he wanted $6 million +

Stempniak's a nice stopgap for a couple years until the Canes find a permanent solution at right wing. At least he can score.

I could be wrong, but I think he Canes can protect everyone on their roster that's worth a damn with the expansion rules. At least that's how it looked when I ran the simulator on General Fanager.

Stempniak's a good player, though. Have some more options with their forward lines now.
