Because of this comment people in this thread are expecting trades now so a bunch will probably happen that none of us care about.

 

Is Ben Smith getting signed by leafs or is he a free agent July 1st?

No idea. If he was an RFA, he wasn't qualified. Tbh between Ben Smith and Colin Smith I can't even remember who was who, even while they were playing and looking at the names on their jerseys, I still was getting them confused.

So yeah, fucked if I know. Though I do know the Marlies are losing a bunch of players, so I imagine they'll try to retain anyone half decent.

I'm pretty sure he is a UFA but I always loved him and hoped he helped through the Leafs rebuild. I guess there is a chance he could get a two way deal then.

 

I don't blame Loui for not wanting to sign here. Dude is arguably the second best forward on the market, and all he's heard for the past three years from these mouthbreather mutant fans is that in essence he is not Tyler Seguin. Donny Boy is going to go all in on Stamkos, totally whiff, and by the time he's signed, so will dudes like Okposo and Eriksson, leaving us with resorting to Stempniak and Vanek on a one-year deal.

Either way they have no cap room for Stamkos.

If Loui leaves then the whole seguin trade looks even worse on the Bruins. It already looks pretty bad but that could make it even worse.

 

I know this isn't what you said but for the record, I don't think any Leaf fan here legitimately thinks he comes to Toronto, myself included. I also don't think he willingly signs in Buffalo either, though.

 

I think we'll sign him for the "veteran" dressing room presence. As it stands, I'm not sure we've got many 4th line guys under contract.

 

Ftr I used to 100% believe we were gonna get Stamkos up until he got injured + we went took the scorched earth approach. Now I still think he wants to play for us but we're not gonna want him at his price.

 

Dreger and McKenzie have both called Buffalo a likely destination, with Dreger even saying we offer everything Stamkos is probably looking for.

 

The main reason I don't come to Toronto if I'm Stamkos is because the team is in a rebuild. Dudes been to the SCF, what, twice (sorta)? I'm sure he wants to get there again before he retires and I doubt that happens here.

 

Fair, but I look at the pieces BUF has in place and I doubt he'd want to move to a rebuild team. I bet he ends up resigning in TB or somewhere not mentioned currently.

I've got a bias in thinking Buffalo is a horribly awful city though, so... Apologies if that offends...

 

playoffs are NOT out of the realm of possibility for the Sabres with or without Stamkos.

 

I think we're definitely gonna be a contender in a few years barring an absolute disaster, i.e. paying a broken-legged, heart-condition-having Steven Stamkos 12M a year for the better part of the next decade.
