I don't know much about insurance - I thought suicide pretty much vacated any payout.

But could there be some weird loophole in some insurance he had where this brief "not a convict" window meant his family would get paid?

I'm just trying to find an actual reason for this, but it's somewhat pointless trying to find any reason in this guy's actions.

 

For what it's worth, Hernandez's former agent told reporters he highly doubts he killed himself, implying other people did it to him. Given his gang ties, prison run-ins, his perceived celebrity, his temper, it's not a totally impossible thing I guess. It will be interesting to see what the investigations conclude.

 

Wasn't his cell barricaded from the inside? He lived in the cell by himself.
