Absolutely. I mean you are talking legitimate run-down shanties like you see in infomercials just across the highway that separates El Paso from Mexico. You ride up right against the border. It's truly a haves and have nots situation, and El Paso isn't even that nice compared to most places in America.

 

Just looked at the path 287 takes and I understand your misery

 

I'd take the 8 to the 10 to the 20 for 1,200 miles every time I went to/from San Diego to Abilene for school. Can confirm it is a desolate wasteland.

I did that trip 25 times in 4 years

 

I'm going to work but when I come back I expect you guys to still be making fun of Texas

 

There's only one state I've ever been in that's made me think "Wow this state has no redeemable qualities at all" and that state is Alabama

 

Route 10 I think is the one that rides next to Mexico if I remember right. The first geographical hint I remember is when we saw the barbed wire fencing and walls on one side of the highway. I think when we started out we cut across just below Austin to meet up with 10. And you don't really realize you are on a collision course for Mexico if you just keep going straight. Next thing you know one side is the US and the other is Mexico and you are going through a government checkpoint. And then you head up towards El Paso. Being from Ohio and knowing my geography, I knew it was close to Mexico, but you don't appreciate that it's literally just a highway dividing the two until you see it. And it's 113 degrees and pure sun. It's like, can I just hang inside the building in the AC haha.

 

How'd you go to Alabama without seeing Mississippi?

 

I flew

I've been to Mississippi but it was just driving through as a kid so I don't count it

But I went to Alabama for lengthy time to visit my mom when she lived there and absolutely hate it

 

Believe it or not, Mississippi is much worse. Louisiana, Arkansas, and West Virginia are up there too.

 

Arkansas has decent nature at least

Like it's bad but it has a quality

Alabama doesn't at all

 

And Louisiana has the best food to grace this earth

 

Arkansas has an amazing museum, that's about it though

 

I've only been to Florida and South Carolina when it comes to the South. I actually haven't been to too many states in general :(

I'm currently the farthest northeast I've ever been and before moving to Jacksonville, I had seen the Pacific twice as many times as I had the Atlantic.

I'm missing Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, Alaska, and Hawaii.

 

I've been to every state except Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, Alabama, Kentucky, and South Carolina.

edit: I did have a layover in Hawaii when I went to Australia but we never left the airport

 

I need to visit Hawaii before it's surrounded by oil

 

I feel really bad for people who haven't been to the south but want to go to every state. I can't imagine a more disappointing way to cross a major milestone off your bucket list.

 

I feel like there's south and there's SOUTH

 

Yeah, like Florida is a southern state but once you get south of Gainesville you're no longer in the south.

 

Yeah, but outside of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, you've got an entire state that looked at southern Georgia and went "no, not enough."
