Jacksonville would make the playoffs if they signed Norman. Toss in Ramsey and we have one of the best secondaries in the league.

  2. I'm ok with not giving him the tag. Just wish it would've been before FA.

This is why I think the salary cap hinders teams and I don't think it does anything to help competitiveness (Read Jason Stark's yearly column on this).

Josh Norman would have stayed a Panther and will probably end up on some qasi contender that won't do anything all because this team is being forced to not afford him.

Imagine if actual business were run this way.

I ate lunch with him and Armanti Edwards today. He has an alibi between 1:00-1:50PM EST. That leaves a pretty big window for murder though.

i can just see him taking a shit ton of money and playing for a non contender

  10. Fuck man. I don't know how to feel about this haha

Norman is one of my favorites. Obviously would rather him stay. But I'm not in favor of paying him more than 12m per. He wants more than that and won't come down. Would've been nice to have him under the tag while we replace him but I guess he's been acting like a douche and Gman said get the fuck outta here.

honest question that I don't know the answer to

couldnt the Panthers just have traded him somewhere?

He would have had to sign the tag first and then I would assume it would be somewhere where he agrees to a deal with sooner than later.

  13. We would've had to eat half the tag money, right?

    They could have.
Nope. Because he didnt sign the tag, they Panthers were free to negotiate a differnet deal with him. He could have willingly signed a 1yr min deal instead of accepting the tag. After July 15, that changes and he can only play under the tag if no new deal is worked out.

So, he could have worked out compensation with another team and he gets traded.

Norman kinda shows the downside of not signing the tag instantly. Sure, you lose the leverage of not showing up for camp, but, you potentially lose out on $18mil guaranteed and got dropped at a time where teams dont have lots of free money

Too bad the Giants aren't doing hard knocks.

Would love them to sign Norman and just watch the show for OBJ/Norman fights.

I dont think Norman will work out for teams with the same awesome personnel as Carolina though. Idk

  17. I'm on the fence about this. He's a great player. But at the same time we went to the SB with Finnegan, Harper and McClain playing big minutes in the secondary. And Coleman had a great season but he's not the first safety we've signed that suddenly became pro-bowl status with us. Mike Mitchell did the same a couple years ago. Now he's back to average.

Norman will still be a top corner. But I'm not sure we need to pay someone top corner money to be successful. Our front seven is more important.

    there is one way out

That's some Steelers reasoning right there.

as a steelers fan i'm starting to wonder if they're making a conscious effort to prove you don't need a cornerback at all to win, let alone a well paid one.

  21. We offered Norman 10m per season (maybe a little more but that's what was last reported). So it's not like we won't throw money at DBs. But Norman is pushing 29 years old and only had one full season of greatness. He wasn't going to get a monster deal here.

Its exactly like when Seahawks lost Maxwell, they offered him a decent deal but they weren't going to break bank and he passed it up for more. I think Norman has a much higher chance of succeeding than being a complete bust though. I'm sure Carolina will figure something out.

Maxwell was never nearly as highly touted as Norman

Problem is, that is right on the edge of top 10 CB money. There's 9 CBs making $10+mil/yr on average.

Sherman, Haden, Peterson, and Revis are making way more, Maxwell and Smith are making right at $10mil/yr, and just this offseason, Janoris Jenkins got $12.5mil/yr on average. So, no reason to settle for $10mil/yr unless its a 5yr deal fully guaranteed

  25. Those guys had more leverage though (outside of Maxwell maybe). Like I said, Norman had one full season of high level play. The other top guys had multiple years to backup their payday. And he's almost 29. Plus he's somewhat of a headache.
