Ive always wanted NFL teams to be able to trade cap space. But, then I look at NBA trades and wonder if its really smart in the end

 

Sitting out for a year would be really, really dumb. Likely chance he falls further in the draft and ends up making less than Chargers are paying him, but even if he got picked higher the fact that he is delaying free agency for another year would be significant in the long term. It's understandable that he wants a fair contract now, but the second contract is the one that really matters and delaying that over this would be so silly.

 

Has a top player ever gone back into the draft?

 

The thing that sucks for Bosa now is that the NFL has raw data on him from the combine and pro day. He sits out this year, he will likely need to do all of these events next year and if his numbers dip then that's only going to affect him even more.

Bo Jackson, actually. Drafted #1 by Bucs, refused to play, went to the MLB. Drafted the next year by the Raiders in the 7th round and played for them. Run-down of it here

La'el Collins is probably the next closest. He came out and said, if I dont get drafted by the end of round 3, Ill return to the 2016 draft. Ultimately became an undrafted free agent because of that threat. Obviously Elway and Eli are two others who threatened to not play for their teams and got traded...but, all of those never went as far as Bo

 

I should probably go watch the 30 for 30 on Bo lol. Eli was the only other one that came to mind that threatened this before

 

Raiders got a fucking steal in Bo, knew he refused to play for the Bucs, didn't know he was taken in the 7th

 

What if the Chargers just select him again next year though.

 

I'm pretty sure the rules state that they would not be allowed to select him again in the 2017 draft.

Also, Bosa would probably still go first round. I mean, Jaylon Smith went early 2nd, and he was known not to be playing for all of 2016 with a massive knee issue. So, gotta imagine that a healthy and rested top D-lineman still goes mid-round.

Could you imagine the Chargers wasting back-to-back 1st rounders on him even if they could take him again

 

Also, if Bosa did that and still went in the 1st round (or even early 2nd), that shit would be scary for NFL teams. A major part of their leverage is the uncertainty of doing that. Suddenly you might get top 5 picks saying "fuck playing for the Browns" and taking their chance the next year.

If I were another NFL team, Id be calling the Chargers and telling them to wise up

 

Not that it means anything in the long run, but Oakland Raiders have now filed a trademark application for "Las Vegas Raiders".

Like I said they're taking a massive chance because they want to be able to lowball him when/if his capabilities come back

 

They're obviously not signing him, so...

 

Bosa would still be first round pick but probably a mid or so. He wouldn't have been taken above Garrett this year, let alone next.

 

I would say I hope the Jags take him and cut Odrick but I'm trying to be picking at least in the late teens to early 20s this year.

 

We will probably be 14-18. Bosa probably won't fall but either way I like that range a lot. I think RBs are gonna go high next year so we should be pretty well off.

 

Ha, this reminds me. If the Colts pick a first round RB instead of pass rush next draft, I'll be very sad.
