If I remember correctly, when UW scheduled Rutgers, UW was coming off an 0-12 season while Rutgers was actually pretty good.

You can't do much about that but I get that argument.

Here's how I think this should play out if Clemson & Washington both win and the committee is dead set on Ohio State (which they are):

    1. Bama
    2. Clemson (Washington should be #2 imo, but I'm following the committee thinking here)
    3. Washington
    4. Ohio State

If you're going to include a team that didn't win their conference championship (or even play in it), at least make them play Bama in the semis.

Also, not to bring it back up, but I don't like the idea of 6 teams at all. You really wanna give Bama an extra week of rest? I get rewarding teams, and that's fine (love the FCS playoffs, go Spiders!). But if you wanna make it less predictable and include more conference champions, go to 8 teams.

Metrics wise, how Washington stacks up around the country vs their opponent in the P12 Title Game.

    SRS > 4th, trailing Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan...Colorado 8th

Sagarin Predictor > 4th, trailing Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan...Colorado 11th

ESPN FPI > 5th, trailing Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson...Colorado 13th

Power Rank > 7th, trailing Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, Florida State...Colorado 27th

FEI > 5th, trailing Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson...Colorado 6th

    ESPN Efficiency > 3rd, trailing Alabama, Michigan...Colorado 11th

    S&P+ > 6th, trailing Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson, LSU...Colorado 15th

If I put the homer aside, I would say Clemson/UW are neck and neck as far as playoff seeding goes but Washington beating the better team (if it happens) this weekend should put them in front.

Also Ohio State being idle and not playing in a title game should knock them down. It won't, but it should. You won't see me argue them not being worthy of being in the playoff because they are but they shouldn't be #2 and a case for them missing entirely could absolutely be made if Penn State wins the B1G championship.

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

i think i like the idea of an 8 team playoff, but are there 8 worthwhile teams that should be given a chance for the title - year in and year out?

Yes. The 8th team should always be the fringe team. Fourth leaves way too much room for error.

I really like the idea of 8 teams with every conference champ + the best Group of 5 team guaranteed a spot, but I doubt that happens

Sounds like we're in agreement that we should have a Clemson v UW semi and a Bama v OSU semi. Sounds good to me, let's win the conferences and spot the ball!

100% in agreement. Figure that'd be one hell of a game, too.

I hate the idea that Alabama and whatever 8th seed you want ends up with the same opportunity to become champ.

    I hateeeeeee 8

    The rivalry is back on

An 8 team playoff probably means conference championships need to be cut and then there's no "good" way to tell who the conference champions are and then you have the same problem as before.

I also don't like the idea of the best teams being able to tank rivalry week. Rivalries are one of the cool and unique things to college sports.

They don't though. Alabama is a ridiculously better team than Penn State or whoever.

But shouldn't they get some sort of reward for being the best team in the country? a bye... home field...

In a one and done sport anything can happen

I think college football does something awesomely unique where they've made the entire season the playoffs essentially.

I dont see the benefit in letting VA tech , Florida or usc into the playoffs.

The season is over pretty quick. You lose two games and you're out. It's less exciting. There are less variables. Conference champions give actual excitement to the entire year. Instead of "well, the Big 12 sucks, neat."

Maybe if there were 8 teams, the talent would be spread around more as well? With how few teams make the playoffs, I'm sure that has an effect on where certain players want to play.

And I also think there's benefit of 8 teams in other ways, too. USC didn't really figure it out until midway through the season, and by then their playoff hopes were gone. They look like an excellent team now, and I would very much enjoy seeing them have a shot in the playoffs if it was 8 teams.

Can you really be the best team out of 120+ in the FBS if you lost 3 or more times in a 14-15 game season?

If you go to 8, you gotta go power 5 conf champs, best of the next 5, and then two lucky losers, who I'd argue also need to have made the conference championship. Which, this year would leave out Ohio State entirely, but I also think that should be the penalty for not making the conference championship (even though of course Ohio State is one of the best eight teams in the country)

This year, that would make the playoffs (choosing the higher ranked team as the winner of the championship game):

Alabama, Clemson, Washington, Wisconsin, Western Michigan, Oklahoma

And the highest ranked of the two losers from: Florida, Virginia Tech, Colorado, Penn State, Oklahoma State

Barring Western Michigan, Florida, and Virginia Tech, that's all top 10 teams.

The only "blatant omissions" from that formula would be Michigan and Ohio State this year. But again, there's got to be some penalty in my mind for not making the conference championship game.

Last Season it would've looked like:

    1. Clemson vs. 8. Notre Dame (no rest of 5 team in top 25)
    2. Alabama vs. 7. Ohio State
    3. Michigan State vs. 6. Stanford
    4. Oklahoma vs. 5 Iowa -- this would've been a rematch, interestingly enough of the conference championship the week before

Agreed. USC and Oklahoma are playing like playoff teams. They should be in the playoffs. Best part too is there is much less debate. There is a 100 percent rate of arguing about who is 4th or 5th. That will always be an argument. 8th versus 9th though? Not so much.

Ugh if MSU could've played Stanford in the first round instead of Alabama last year...

Yes. Wisconsin barely lost to two top four teams. They have the best losses of the season.
