the writing is on the wall that no one outside of the top 4 has a chance, unless clemson or washington lose, which is bullshit

So next season the Big 12 adds a conference championship game but no divisions - so top 2 teams in conference play battle for conference title.

Made me wonder what the conference title games this year for all conferences would look like if there were no divisions, just the top two teams by conference W-L faced off and if this is what conferences may one day change to:

ACC: Clemson vs Louisville - rematch instead of Clemson vs VT

Big Ten: Penn State vs Ohio State - rematch instead of Penn State vs WI

Big 12: Oklahoma vs Ok State - game we get this week anyway to decide conference

PAC-12: Washington vs Colorado - same as actual game

SEC: Alabama vs Florida - same as actual game

Surprisingly not a lot of change this year.

The thing is, that still doesn't put the two best teams in each conference in the championship. I know there's no way to really do that, just interesting to me that Penn State gets in either way though they're probably fourth best in the B1G.

Agreed. And oddly enough, just a quick look through the last few years and it doesn't look like taking out the divisions in the conferences make for many changes so it wouldn't be a drastic change with a lot of use / repercussion.

No perfect system, that's for sure.

I guess one could squabble about how the divisions in a conference are decided. I'm sure there's a reason for it but haven't looked closely at it. Like, if Auburn and Alabama weren't in the same division, then they have a rematch in the SEC title game instead of Auburn going after the win with the kick-six in 2013 and facing Missouri (WHAT?!) and ultimately losing to fucking Florida State in the title game.

But does that make their rivalry game less important if they'd just meet again a week later? But was Missouri a better team than Alabama that year? (Answer: absolutely not)

Are all rivals in the same division? Is that part of how divisions were decided?

I think the playoffs of Wash vs Bama, Clemson vs OSU will be quite awesome.

In regards to rivalries in the SEC, divisions were decided by geography (except Missouri because reason below) and a desire to keep certain rivalries in tact annually. Tennessee-Alabama, Florida-LSU, and Georgia-Auburn had to be preserved so they built in permanent cross-division rivals to keep those despite geography.

The argument for Missouri in the East basically came down to Alabama not playing one of Tennessee or Auburn annually which was never going to happen.

Not sure how the other conferences chose. Wouldn't be surprised if its similar.

Yup. I think the general consensus is (and should be) that Washington gets plungered by Bama as they'll be probably a -15 or so on the early line.

However, something about Chris Petersen in big games tells me they would fight with Bama for a while. Clearly the talent mismatch is pretty big as a whole and that'll be likely what decides it but merely appearing in the playoff would do wonders for a program who is already starting to become a recruiting powerhouse on the west coast.

I saw an article a week or two ago that stated Chris Petersen is "building the Bama of the West Coast" and I wasn't entirely sure what to make of that but I see it. They aren't ready for the playoffs this year and I understand that but the appearance itself will be worth it on various fronts.

However....Need to take care of Colorado on Friday first which won't be a push over.

Holding out hope that with an impressive performance, maybe UW can jump Clemson and get into the 3 spot and avoid Bama entirely until the final if they were to make it that far.

I don't know if Missouri was better than Bama that year, but I always thought they would have matched up better with them in the sec title game. If there were no divisions (and assuming everyone played the same schedules they did that year) then Bama, Auburn, and Mizzou would have ended that season in a three way tie for first in the sec and no current tiebreak format (used for divisional ties) could decided who goes to the title game with auburn. Most logical tiebreak would be head to head, then record against common opponents (which were the same for Bama and Mizzou) so you can't really say with certainty Bama would have gone over Mizzou anyways, right?

    The rivalry is back on

Vanderbilt had such a weird season. Beat Tennessee, UGA, and Ole Miss. Lost to South Carolina and got thumped by Mizzou. I thought they'd finish 6-6, but that's not the way I drew it up.

I honestly don't think Bama over Wash is a slam dunk win and that's coming from a Bama fan. I will admit I haven't seen much of Washington and don't know how their Lines are which could affect this greatly but from what I've seen and heard their strength is Browning and the passing game, which is Bama's weakness on D, especially with Eddie Jackson out for the year. Throw in the early game struggles the offense has been having and it's not an easy game. I still think/hope Bama would pull out the win, but Alabama has not been as amazing and head and shoulders above the rest of the country as many think.

Yeah not sure why that is missing but even with that added in? Still looks better for UW, imo.

yes! this is what i was talking about the other day. it seems like we all - from the very beginning - just had Clemson automatically in the playoffs. and then they lost and nothing changed! but their schedule isn't what it originally looked like and no one seems to give a shit.

Clemson beat #11, 13 and 14 while UW beat #22,23, and 24. But the team UW lost to is better. I can kinda see it either way I guess

The non-conf argument against Washington is completely fair btw. I'm all for making these teams schedule better games
