Washington could and would beat Clemson and Ohio State. Michigan is a toss-up. And the game I want to see the most.

Fuck Clemson for staying at #4, that's dumb.

@xkj1985x I gotta say, I don't quite understand the mindset of not wanting to be in the playoff and going to the Rose Bowl instead. I mean, I get that the Rose Bowl is a more likely W, but a W in the Rose Bowl means less now than ever before.

Even if you have to play Bama in the semis, at least you have some chance of winning the NC. Yeah it may be small, but it's bigger than the 0% chance you would have by playing in the Rose Bowl. Maybe I'm biased being an Auburn fan and seeing us pull off some magical wins against Alabama, but I still like some chance of winning the NC over no chance. I know you think you're still a year away, but wouldn't it be something to win the NC this year and next year? At least, that's my thinking.

I've put some thought into this and allow me to kind of clarify my thoughts if I may....

I think the general consensus by those here and amongst the College FB world would say that the rankings go 1) Bama 2-25) Who cares, does not matter.

The Huskies haven't played in a Rose Bowl since 2000. While the Rose Bowl may not mean now what it did before the playoff system, it still is a pretty big game on its own massive stage on New Years Day that everybody tunes into. Chris Petersen is already turning UW into a strong recruiting team by going and nabbing some of the best recruits out of Oregon and dipping down into CA, AZ, UT, TX and getting some of their stronger recruits which is something they have not been able to do in years past. They have one of the two best QB prospects in the country committed to them already in 2018 despite him currently getting pressure from Bama and other schools, so it's in motion.

Playing in the Rose Bowl and beating a damn good B1G team (Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin) on the national stage feels like it does a LOT more for the program in every way over going to Atlanta and getting blown out and laughed off the field against Alabama.

At least I feel like it does.....I actually think they can play with Bama but I think the likelihood of an upset is still fairly small and if this is the matchup that happens, then great but I'm just not sure they're ready for that juggernaut just yet and I'd hate to see such a great season end on a very sour note.

Could UW be blown off the field against Ohio State/Michigan/Clemson/Wisconsin? I'm sure they could but I like their chances there much more than I do against Bama at this current juncture.

I love the ferocity and speed on the UW defense and I'm not sure there is a corner in college football that can run with John Ross so I think on any given day, they can beat anybody but for this program to continue to trend up, I think starting with a Rose Bowl win this year and then taking that next step into the playoffs feels like they'd fare better then.

Hopefully this helps explain my viewpoint a bit. I'd be much more open to nabbing a 2 or 3 seed and playing Bama in the final if they could get there, that would at least show one playoff win and a team clearly on its way.

Do any other teams do these shorts throughout the season? UW seems to release 3-5 minute episodes every few weeks which are really cool. I know they have one of the best video guys in the business but I always think these things are cool.

Of sorts yeah, but some of the episodes have some behind the scenes looks that are kinda cool. I've seen various hype videos and this could probably be seen as that but I think the full episodes tend to give you a bit more. Worth a watch when you have a chance.

This is the last one right before the Stanford game. I'd like to seem more of any other teams churn things like this out. Enjoy the hell out of them.

I'm wrestling with my response to this. I think my answer is at least a little biased because I know Auburn can consistently pull off top 15 recruiting classes even when they aren't particularly great the season before.

I definitely get that a Rose Bowl win could bring some serious attention to the program in a positive manner. I think the amount of coverage you receive though from being in the playoffs doubles compared to the Rose Bowl. If you did get smacked by Alabama, it all depends on how you want to spin it. I think most people would say that it really doesn't make a statement about Washington as opposed to just how good Alabama is. I think recruits would more see just how close Washington is. They would know that there is a great shot to return to the playoffs the following season and that would help their recruiting more than hurt.

All in all, I do better understand your perspective now and could honestly see it cutting both ways. I think the positive bump you would see just by making the playoffs could equal the positive spin you get from the Rose Bowl.

I hear you. If I was given the option right now of either a) A Rose Bowl victory or b) A championship loss to Alabama by less than I dunno...ten points then I would 10000000% take option b as it would prove that they were competitive with easily the best team in the country by a large margin.

I'm just nervous of them getting to that game (or the semi-final against Bama if they get the 4 seed) and get waxed by 30-40 which then might put recruits in the mindset that Washington was no more than the beneficiary of a bad Pac-12.

Now, I think the Pac-12 is having a bad year and will not argue that one bit but I also do think Washington is a legit program and Chris Peterson & company is building this thing the right way and will be a scary team for a long time BUT....I'm just not sure they're ready for this big of a leap after going 7-6 and beating Southern Miss in a bowl game last year is all.

Maybe they are and I'm just being a turd.

  17. iam1bearcat

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

this might be the short-term impact until people realize that Peterson is going to be around a long while (i hope / suspect) and that he's building something even bigger and better than he did in Boise St. even if UW would lose by 10, some would call it lucky or a one-hit wonder that got close, but UW will be good / great the next 3-4 years at least which i think would lessen the impact of a loss to Alabama, especially in this day and age and wouldn't scare recruits away.

but then again people have very short attention spans and 3/4 of the world wants Aaron Rodgers cut from the Packers for being the worst player in the world so what do i know *shrug*

edit: looking at it from my team's perspective (Oregon) - if they were undefeated with a freshman or rookie Mariota would i want them to win a big bowl game or lose the NC? i'd pick "win big bowl game" 10 out of 10 but i get both sides of the argument.

I'm probably just all fucked up over it. Browning is only a Sophmore so he will be back next year and likely the year after. The problem is they are going to lose a lot of defense to the NFL this year (CERTAIN: CB Kevin King (Senior) LIKELY: CB Sidney Jones, CB/S Budda Baker, John Ross III (WR) IFFY BUT I THINK THEY ARE GONE: Azeem Victor (ILB), Elijah Qualls (DT).

Now a few years back when they lost Marcus Peters/Danny Shelton/Hau'oli Kikaha/Shaq Thompson all in one year, the argument could be made that they were even better the year after when the young cats stepped in their places. They'll be in this same situation next year and while they have incredible defensive depth and should be fine, this year might be the best shot.

Granted next year, they're going to have a Top 20 class with 4-5 4/5 Star offensive skill players coming in so who knows. I'm not used to this so I'm just not sure how to handle it lol.

Also, I haven't seen it anywhere but apparently per a few UW insider boards, there was something out there where Chris Petersen stated he wanted to coach at UW (only UW) until he was 55 and then his plan was to retire. Well, he just turned 52 this past Friday.

I think if he continues to build this program the way he has and they continue to be a Top 10 (5?) team into his 55th birthday, he may just reconsider although...maybe not? However, if it does decide to ride off at 55 and has the program where it should be then it'll be an attractive job for coaches and recruits you'd think so all might be well by that point if that happens.

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

Hmm, interesting about him maybe calling it quits at 55.

I'm sure there are a whole lot of variables that could impact his decision (to stay or to go), but looking solely at the state of the Pac-12, it certainly seems like it would be fun and benefit him to stay:

UCLA will never be better than 7-5 most years in my opinion
USC could have some good years but i think they are just too far gone and there are so many other better options on the west coast alone we may not see them as anything special for many, many years

Oregon will likely go back to being what they generally have been. their track record is not 11-2 seasons and major bowl births. that was a lone decade of brilliance, really

Stanford won't get back to their glory of the last half decade / decade, rounding out around 8-4 at best and who knows once Shaw leaves / gets fired
    Arizona - nah
    Arizona State - really nah
Colorado - would be fun to see come back but i think they could lose their coach after this year or next if they finish well
Utah - the most likely up and coming team i could see challenging for conference titles
    Oregon State - no
Washington State - could be a dark horse the next few years
    California - not likely

obviously a stronger conference would be better for playoff seeding and conversation, but Washington could very well be the highlight of the conference for the next decade. maybe i have too much faith and confidence in Peterson, but i really think he has all the tools and ability and he's already way ahead of schedule for turning that team into something (again).

I think I'm just spoiled of being an Auburn fan of the last decade. I mean in the middle of the 00s, we had 33 wins over the course of 3 years. So moral victories in big bowl games grew to be somewhat meaningless, especially in 2004 when we should've been in the National Championship.

In regards to Petersen, I have a lot of respect for any one who can make a statement like that and stick to it. Granted, he will be missed in the world of college football, but that's pretty cool he wants to live a life outside of it for a while.

I think the good thing for the Pac-12 is that there could just be new teams stepping up to take the place of Oregon and Stanford. I think Washington, Colorado, and Utah all have the chance to make that leap and be perennial contenders in some sense of the word.

  22. iam1bearcat

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

i agree that those would be the three. Colorado is shaky just because, well, it's Colorado, but they're definitely improving. and everyone seems to forget about Utah - even when they have great years and beat Alabama in major bowl games! - but they're still a year or two away and always seem to have a puzzling loss or two.

but, these three are much more likely to contend than anyone else in the Pac-12 and i always like change and to see the rotation of powerhouses (although i don't mind Alabama's dominance, find it fascinating really)

Utah seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut offensively. I'm sure having something like 5-6 running backs injured hurts that but they've never been particularly electric on offense but have had such a strong defense that it wins them games alone. Their QB, Troy Williams, is a Washington transfer who couldn't be out garbage ass Cyler Myles or Jeff Lindquist a few years ago so I'm curious to see how he plays against us/how we scheme to play him in a few weeks.

I think that is why I *takes off homer glasses* think that Washington is the best team in the conference because when you look at all three phases, Washington is pretty loaded at all and then their coaching staff is easily Top 3 in the conference.

Still not really sure what to make of Colorado just yet....

This is probably it but who can blame you? Most of those upper tier schools down south consistently have Top 10 recruiting classes so you always have the horses to be in the thick of things. Not so much in Washington but it's trending that way. I think they're 18th in the nation for 2017 recruiting now with about 5-6 spots left and some big fish still swimming out there including the nations #1 OVR player who lives about 45 min from Seattle in Foster Sarrell.

He was pretty much pegged to go to Stanford since the spring and he still may but given the way both programs are kind of heading, there is reason to believe that it might be moving in the other direction a bit.

UW has been incapable of keeping homegrown offensive line talent here (i.e. David DeCastro/Josh Garnett) so hopefully that's another thing that Petersen can figure out how to do.
