1. Taylor Swift - Red 2. The Mountain Goats -Transcendental Youth 3. Now, Now - Threads tricky year for me as there are a lot of very good or great albums from this year, but no clear number one *all-timer* in the bunch (Red is close) other faves: Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss The Sidekicks - Awkward Breeds Van Morrison - Born to Sing: No Plan B Chief Keef - Finally Rich One Direction - Take Me Home TV Girl - The Wild, the Innocent, the TV Shuffle most of the consensus faves from this year (Channel Orange, GKMC, Celebration Rock, etc.) were huge for me at the time but I hardly reach for them these days Channel Orange specifically has aged pretty poorly for me
Honestly didn't hate this album when it came out. At the time, deep cuts like "Demons" and "Every Night" were totally inoffensive before they got played to death publicly. I can't believe it's been since 2016 that we've had an official release. I don't really count Endless because I still haven't heard it haha. There's something to be said for ease of access.
I actually like Channel Orange a lot more now than I did in 2012. Still haven't come around on Blonde. I do agree that I think he's capable of a full album that's way better than anything he's put out based on how amazing his best songs are.
I put it as "honorable mention". I definitely listened to it quite a bit in 2012, and even though it has some cringe-y stuff too, there are a few memorable tracks.
Celebration Rock is about as lean and perfect as that type of record can get. To borrow a Nil reference, it has NO WEAKNESSES.
I could do without the cover for sure. It’s a pretty tight record overall but I think some of it’s a little middling. Post Nothing is better imo
I also remember being disappointed in their Conan appearance, where I think because they were touring so much, they sang most of The House That Heaven Built an entire octave down
Younger Us -> House that Heaven Built -> Continuous Thunder is an unreal ending run to Celebration Rock. Album is a monster.
Seems from the voting that Diamond Eyes is more of a consensus fave for '10s Deftones records, but I will present my argument for Koi No Yokan with this video. This song should've been way bigger - hits all of the best trademarks of the band. A total favorite of mine.
Another brilliant brilliant song. A prime example of Chino doing more with less when it comes to lyrics and melody. He sings the hell out of that song.
Koi is a thing of beauty. I think there's maybe one song on there I don't care much for and that's it. Probably the most cinematic 'tones record.
I think Post-Nothing is excellent, but I rarely revisit their third album. Definitely doesn't compare to the other two.
Celebration Rock is god tier. Just an absolutely rip-roaring good time of an album. I could do without the cover, but the other seven songs are perfect.
For the Love of Ivy is definitely a skip for me. I usually turn it off before Continuous Thunder too.
The Money Store is really good but I always have it in my head that it's slightly better than it actually is. I don't think it's quite the masterpiece people sometimes portray it as. The best stuff on it is shit hot though.
Young Hearts Spark Fire is by far my favorite song from them. I won’t argue against the best songs on CR being awesome, but Post Nothing’s relative lack of polish serves the songs really well. One of those bands that’s better the more honest it sounds for lack of a better way of putting it.
Turning Celebration Rock off before “Continuous Thunder” is like turning Born to Run off before “Jungleland.” Unfathomable to me, lol.
