I love this year so fucking much. Not sure if it's just great memories, or the albums were that great or what. But I really really love this year.

 

2010 was fucking weird.

I have to do my taxes tonight...Yes I know, last minute Larry over here...so my list will have to wait.

Weird just because Cobra Starship and Fall Out Boy didn't release albums???

To reiterate my Danger Days love, that album was a really interesting pivot and almost ahead of its time. For whatever reason, it wasn't embraced by the teens who loved the black-makeup MCR and weren't really a fan of the neon-colored futuristic sound (at least here in the US). That being said, I think it did well in the UK, Europe and Japan especially given MCR's ability to headline the Reading Festival when they were back slogging through 2-3k clubs here in US.

I wish the Super Mash Bros albums were on spotify too. I thought some of their shit was better than Girl Talk.

 

Super Mash definitely felt like the high school garage version of what Girl Talk did, but I do remember them being fun as well. I have two albums in my library, All About The Scrillions and Mile(y) High Club

3. The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

We Were Exploding Anyway is a marvel, a layered and continually mesmerising piece of electronic infused post-rock that just absolutely sets the bar for how those two genres can be fused together, that anybody else that tries something similar is doomed by comparison. I could listen to an hour long version of Tiger Girl alone.

I will continually flux between my favourite National album, but I think on more days than most, I'd give the edge to High Violet. A wonderful piece of melancholy, with instrumentation that makes it soar.

The Wild Hunt is basically the same album again from The Tallest Man on Earth, but if it's aint broke, don't fix it. Incredibly written, both from a lyrical and songwriting perspective, and wonderfully performed.

Honourable Mentions;

Dessa - A Badly Broken Code: Pretty unlucky not to make the top three, but I think I prefer the versions on Castor, The Twin slightly more than the originals here. One of my favourite lyricists and storytellers in music.

Kanye West - My Dark Beautiful Twisted Fantasy: A sprawling, maximalist piece of work that chucks everything at it, and a fantastic exploration of Kanye's psyche and worldview.

Meursault - All Creatures Will Make Merry: A sometimes impenetrable bit of folktronica, but when it works, songs like "Song for Martin Kippenberger" are stunning.

Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks: A louder and noisier record than Midnight Organ Fight, and sometimes it does drown the songs a bit, but they still manage to shine through.

The Xcerts - Scatterbrain: Sounds a little too close to Brand New's Daisy at times, but if you love that sound, and want to hear a band that are bloody lovely people (touch wood) doing that sound, this is a great noisy bit of indie rock.

65daysofstatic - Heavy Sky: Off-cuts from We Were Exploding Anyway, and while it can't compare to that album, it's a fantastic companion EP / mini-album.

Gil-Scott Heron - I'm New Here: The legendary figure taking on more modern sounds with electronica and trip-hop, meeting his poetic spoken word vocals.

The Menzingers - Chamberlain Waits: Time Tables might still be their best song, a really great raucous, rough-and-tumble punk record.

Capsule - Player: Energetic and silly electro-pop, that's a blast to listen to.

The Chariot - Long Live: Not one that's necessarily on regular rotation, but when I'm after a metalcore album to just hit with 30 minutes of intensity, this'll do nicely. "The City" is their best song.

I had MBDTF as my #1 on my list IN 2010. I just don't come back to it all that often.

And honestly, with Kanye's career trajectory since then, I can never decide if that should make me appreciate MBDTF all that much more or not lol.
