Interesting to see some of the love for Death Magnetic. My memory of it at the time is that people praised it as a "return to form" after St Anger but over time people soured on it.
I've not heard it in a long time but I loved it when it came out. Completely forgot about it when making my list, it might have made it.
First of all, thank you for having Folie on your top 3. and Second of all....dammmmmmnnnn this is a fantastic list!
As big a Metallica fan I am I dont think I ever really gave Death Magnetic a chance. My fandom kinda died with St Anger and the rise of pop punk, and then I got back into them a decade later with Hardwired to Self Destruct. Maybe I'll revisit DM today.
Trying to decide if this is my last year doing the big, comprehensive list. Not sure I can do it in good conscience in a year in which my band put out two albums. Just seems too recent.
Would understand where you're coming from and the reasoning, but I think I speak for several of us that I would be bummed to not see your list. You always seem to mention at least I few that I enjoy and COMPLETELY forgot about, and not to mention good recommendations for stuff that I did not know before.
Death Magnetic is classic Metallica in that it's a fantastic album with production issues, like just about every record in their entire career.
1. Tallest Man - Shallow Grave 2. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend 3. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter 3 HM: 808s, Feed the Animals (still soooooooo much fun), Viva la Vida, Fleet Foxes Albums I don't love in full but have some fantastic standouts: '59 Sound (the opening 4 song run, goddamn), Fearless, Folie (buffaloes is at worst top 3 FOB song), Wolf Parade - At Mt Zoomer, Beach House - Devotion, M83, Pretty. Odd Not in love with this year overall. Weezer confirmed Make Believe's epic disappointment was no fluke. Death Cab put out their first bad album (starts really strong and absolutely falls apart after Cath, imo). Devotion is easily my least favorite of the first 4 Beach House albums. Fleet Foxes and Wayne are probably the only two above that I feel peaked with this release, and the latter probably says more about how much more of his discography I need to give a serious relisten to.
This is a year I went all in on skramz and sludge. Still love a lot of these records. 1. Murder By Death - Red of Tooth & Claw 2. Mutyumu - il y a 3. Why? - Alopecia Foals - Antidotes Century - Black Ocean Killing the Dream - Fractures Sigur Ros - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust Santigold - Santogold Ceremony - Still Nothing Moves You Cursed - III Blacklisted - Heavier than Heaven... Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground - s/t Loma Prieta - Last City Girl Talk - Feed the Animals Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue Foxy Shazam - Introducing... Protest the Hero - Fortress Genghis Tron - Board Up the House Admiral Angry - Buster Annuals - Such Fun Burst - Lazurus Bird Maps & Atlases - You and me and the Mountain Torche - Meanderthal Daitro / Sed Non Satiata split Margot & the Nuclear So & So's - Animal / Not Animal https://rateyourmusic.com/list/ecirht/best_of_08/
I feel like I post it way too often, but this album is so fucking unique and wonderful and gorgeous. Really wish it were on streaming. Maybe I'll try and find a physical copy somewhere.
I really like that album but I've only heard it a few times and it's so dense. Will probably be on my 2008 list eventually haha.
The third Unforgiven is not one of their best but I’m shocked “All Nightmare Long” isn’t exactly your kind of jam
Listened to Weezer's Red album and actually quite enjoyed it aside from the songs the other guys were singing.
I agree 100%. It's a shame Ryan left the band, but looking at the direction Patd took after his exit it's clear it had to happen. New Perspective is kind of a mix between Fever and Pretty Odd, and it rules. This acoustic take is amazing. Brendon is such a good freacking singer.
If anyone likes heavy screaming shit, I’d feel very accomplished if I got some humans to actually listen to that Riendeau EP. I’m biased because I knew them but I legitimately think it’s a great metal record
