Also, realizing now that, even after the talk about Bon Iver, I forgot to list it here because that was so firmly a 2008 album for me. Oh well, it wasn't going to be top 3. I'll jot down some thoughts about it and just include that next week.
Yep, apparently this was self-release in 2006. Had no idea. That type of thing was evidently extremely common in the 2000s, which is kind of annoying! I'm still counting it for 2007, because that's when everyone heard of her.
This was freshman year of high school for me. Looking at everyone’s lists, maybe my most influential year of music ever. Looooots of albums here that I adore. 1) Bomb the music industry - Get Warmer I didn’t actually get into BTMI until a year or two later (more like when Scrambles came out, when I was old enough to drive myself around to their shows in NJ) but this is definitely the album from this year I go back to most now 2) Radiohead - In Rainbows Had never heard of Radiohead and only downloaded this because it was pay what you want. Changed my life 3) Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre Probably my favorite SA release. Cannot describe how much this band defined my life in those years. Shoutout to the Coheed, MCS, and Streetlight albums, those are right up there as well.
Hey @Craig Manning fave tracks on the Cary Brothers LP? i added it to my list yesterday per your rec, and heard a song on shuffle today that I really enjoyed I just already forget which one it was. Will try to give the whole album a spin tomorrow!
Haha, was it a ballad or a not-ballad? Favs are usually “The Last One,” “Honestly,” and “Precious Lie,” but it’s really one of those albums where I have some kind of major connection to every track.
Actually just remembered I could check lastFM - it was "All the rage". Kind of a ballad, I think? I really really liked it though definitely will listen to this. And I had never heard of them before , somehow.
I really don’t think I have an album I really really loved from this year. I’m looking through everyone’s lists and there some where I like some songs (the con, riot, spill canvas, straylight run, etc), but no albums where I’m like THaTS my number one! i spent a lot of 2007 in a drunken stupor listening to albums from the previous 3-5 years haha. I remember random radio rap songs from this year as well, like At Bay Bay
I gusss if I had a #1 album it’d be 1. Alkaline Trio-Remains But it’s a compilation album so don’t think it really counts
I tried going back to them and Tie Fighter and fucking HATED both records despite being obsessed back then. That sounds has aged so poorly to me. The production sucked too. Lol
That's a great one, too. Some really nice harmony work on that song. For the record, Cary Brothers is one guy; his last name is Brothers. I believe this is confusing for literally everyone who has ever listened to or encountered Cary Brothers, haha.
Can you rec me some essential thrash/hardcore/death/black metal stuff. Pretend I literally haven’t heard a record from the genre. I’ve been digging Darkthrone recently and need some more heavy stuff
I started working at American Eagle in 2008 and have very strong memories of "Back In Your Head" on a few of our store DVDs
Bahahaha I fell right into that n00b trap!! thanks for sharing this album tho man, will share my thoughts after I listen.
Ah dang I just checked the last thread and I didnt include it! Wouldn't have made my top 3 so it's fine, but definitely a top 10 album for me from 2007. I still listen to it pretty regularly.
I feel like, thanks to Jason and Craig, ap.net and Chorus have been probably the biggest hubs of Cary Brothers love around.
It's not my favorite of hers, but like I wrote, she had a really consistent run from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s. Lost me a little on her last record, but I should probably revisit that. Proud of that. Interviewed him a few years ago, and he was fun to talk to. His recollections of helping Zach Braff put together the Garden State soundtrack were especially cool.
I've always been fascinated by the little pockets of love like that. Bands and artists who are tiny overall but enjoy wide support here. Similar to regional hits and artists who are big in certain countries. That specificity is fascinating.
