So some other ones I def need to mention... -Sams Town has so many good songs on it. I remember hearing When You Were Young for the first time and being obsessed with it. Almost couldn't believe it was the Killers. All the rest of the singles besides maybe Bones I really loved too. Title track is good, got into Bling from hearing at shows, etc. -The JT album was evvvvvverywhere. Most of my memories of those songs come from school dances with my girlfriend at the time lol. But also for whatever reason, My Love was on the bowling alley video playlist when we'd go midnight bowling. -Couldnt' escape Miss Murder either. Still dig that song -Wow, radio rap was really going strong this year. Lol so many songs I remember...Grillz, Laffy Taffy, Ridin, Money Maker...wow. That was like the last gasp of that Ludacris/Nelly/booty shaking era. Other radio stuff that year, again so many memories tied to dancing to these songs with my g/f at the school dances. Promiscuous Girl, Temperature, Check On It, SOS, London Bridge, Maneater, Bossy, SHOULDER LEAN! lmao.... etc. Just flooded with memories and nostalgia right now thinking about those types of songs -Speaking of htose types of songs played at dances, can't forget this jawn: -Was this the MArs Volta Album with The Widow on it? One of my best friends and I listened to that song a lot when we were hanging out I remember -Remember the HelloGoodbye single. Also remember the touchdown turnaround from aim profiles and livejournals again. -Cupid's Chokehold was also everywhere that year. An enjoyable song. -I remember Boys Like Girls more in 2007, probably because I had bought tickets to a concert at UD for my g/f before we broke up. IT was them, HelloGoodbye, and another band escaping me right now...The Rocket Summer maybe?...but yeah, The Great Escape is like, to me, where we started to see the pop punk/emo height begin to crumble a bit, as in all the bands started to sound like the high nasally "The Great Escape" to me....that's probably wrong, but it's what I remember lol. 2006/7 always seemed to be where the scene's time in the sun began to end. I still like The Great Escape and Thunder. -The Curse of Curves was another I remember from livejournal/AIM away messages. Still dig the song -Another decent Weird Al album. Was happy he got a bunch of mainstream play/success again with White N Nerdy. I remember a lot of people being impressed with his ability to rap in that song lol -I remember that Blue October song Hate Me as well. Very sad, video kills me. -Matt Skiba's side project Heavens put out an album I really liked this year. I need to go back and listen to it. I still have Another Night on my ipod but lost the rest of the album from my library at some point. Probably so much mroe I'm forgetting. So much memories and nostalgia tied up in my senior year of HS, a year deep into my first love/relationship, albums I got into after said relationship ended, the rap artists of my middle school days getting some of their last radio hits, etc.
MCR feels more popular now than they did in 2006. Obviously not overall as they were all over mtv then, but I feel like their standing in the genre has risen considerably. Am I wrong on that?
From what I've seen most of the people who loved them seem to love them even more, a lot of people who hated them have re-evaluated their stuff, especially The Black Parade, and then a lot of younger kids have gotten into them. It's weird thinking about them being as old to 16 year olds now as The Smiths were for me when I was that age.
Definitely seems like meme culture has helped their stock with the younger crowd. Lot of emo band memes seem to feature them
Partly the natural result of people of a certain age becoming critics. I think it happens quite a lot.
I went to Azkena Rock Festival (9-2-2006) and Madrid that same week (9-7-2006). That day at Azkena Rock Festival was so much fun... Wolfmother, My Morning Jacket and Berri Txarrak had great shows too. I've seen them more times (San Sebastián 2000, Madrid 2007, BBK Live 2009, Berlin and Stockholm 2014 and Barcelona 2018), but on that Avocado tour they were absolutely on fire.
This one is legit incredible. I think you'll love it. I agree wholeheartedly. You can just hear how exhausted and trapped he feels all over it. It's no O, but for an artist of his talent that makes for a fascinating little record. I realized I couldn't really rank this, so I listened this week. I still think it's a bit of a shaggy transition record, but christ there are a bunch of good songs on it. "Reinvent", "Lie", "Let You Sleep", "Like Riding a Bike", "Breathe", "What Comes Up through the Floor" are all classics, so the end result is a heck of an album FUCK yes. Great goddamn album. Are you a fan of Something for the Rest of Us or forgetting about it? To me that one was shockingly faceless and lacking in memorable melodies. I remember being really jarred by it. The shit that sounds like the Police going emo is some of the most uniquely excellent stuff in the genre. But there are definitely 2-3 less excellent songs Top 5 for SURE
Re: Damien, every time I wondered why he hadn't released a follow up in the years between 9 and Fantasy, I'd just listen to that record and remember "Oh yeah, he sounds completely miserable. That probably has something to do with it." Brutal album. Re: Chad, you definitely listed most of the ones I really like there. It's nowhere near as good as his other solo LPs, but I still love it. Re: Goos, I guess you're right, that one is a little boring. I feel like Johnny at least still had some lyrical gas left in the tank on that album, though, and I very much enjoy Magnetic.
It also fits beautifully into the best thing about his career: He ends every single album well aware it could be the last song in his discography and he always wants to make it COUNT.
Magnetic was a pleasant surprise. It’s not even remotely the Goo Goo Dolls, but it’s a pleasant pop group with Johnny Rzeznik singing.
I feel bad for not giving any points to Dog Problems since it's so close to being in my top 3 for this year and would be my AOTY for most other years.
Ben’s awesome but I keep waiting for him to put out a top-to-bottom classic. I think he has it in him.
