I know we're all doing the weird coy shit with Brand New, so I'll say that the Leaked Demos from 06 are far and away my favorite release from them, and the only bit of music from them that I ever have a desire to return to. All that being said, fuck Jesse Lacey and fuck the band for being silent.

Happy Hollow is also my favorite Cursive album. just great front to back with no filler. The Black Parade is fantastic, but not the perfection Three Cheers was in my opinion.
i don’t think anyone has been weird or coy about it. it came up a few times in the year for deja and i feel like i was pretty clear how i’d handle it going forward. fuck jesse lacey and a vote for him is a vote for a pedophile. once upon a time it might have been my favorite record. it isn’t that hard to cut stuff out.
a perfect song. mastodon is a pretty good palatable first step into metal for people who don’t dabble a ton
Wow, this was such a stacked year. 1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not 2. John Mayer - Continuum 3. New Found Glory - Coming Home 4. 1. Thursday-ACBTLD 2. mwY- Brother Sister 3. MCR- The Black Parade I used to listen to Rise Against A LOT in 06 so the tour they did with Thursday and Billy Talent was very hype. Also the guitarist in my band showed me Blood Mountain and we would try to learn Circle of Cysquatch
1. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade 2. Fightstar - Grand Unification 3. Joshua Radin - We Were Here Not quite as stacked as 2005 in terms of sheer quantity but this yeah has a bunch of my all time favourites. The Black Parade is a phenomenal, iconic album. It's nice seeing this get more and more appreciation over the years, I think it's a masterpiece and while I still prefer the first two MCR records personally, this is probably the one they'll be remembered for. It's such an ambitious album that always makes me sad that they've been gone for so long when I think of all the cool shit they could have made. Fightstar is my second favourite band and this is probably my favourite album of theirs, I just love their sound so much, incredible melodies and two of my favourite vocalists. We Were Here is probably my favourite singer/songwriter album, those songs just hit me in a special way. I think his voice is perfect for those kind of soft, intimate tunes. I love the use of strings and backing vocals and the lyrics are simple but really effective. Honourable mentions; 4. The Format - Dog Problems; My favourite album from one of my favourite songwriters. The song writing on here is just so fucking good, the instrumentation is varied and fun, the lyrics are fantastic, the melodies are undeniable. This is another one I'm really sad to not have in my top 3. 5. John Mayer - Continuum; My favourite John Mayer album, the perfect sound for him and it's filled with some of the best song writing of his career. "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" and "Gravity" in particular are career highlights. 6. Copeland - Eat, Sleep, Repeat; My favourite Copeland album too! They really evolved into a unique and special sound on this one, "Love Affair" is one of my favourite sounding songs ever. Aaron Marsh has one of my favourite voices in all of music. 7. mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister; My favourite mewithoutYou album! Some of my favourite lyrics ever and a fantastic mix of everything the band does so well. 8. McFly - Motion in the Ocean; My favourite McFly album! They wrote some really great pop songs on this album and really pushed their sound in new directions. 9. Boys Like Girls - Boys Like Girls; This is a pretty perfect pop rock record for me, I really love Martin's voice and his sense of melody on this album. It's such a catchy, fun record. 10. Underoath - Define the Great Line; Most of this album is exactly what I want from Underoath, perfectly mixing the energy and aggression with the super catchy melodies. It's easily their best stuff musically and vocally for me, unfortunately there's just a few songs I've never really clicked with especially the last two that hold it back from potentially being one of my all time favourites. 11. Saosin - Saosin; I don't love this nearly as much as I used to and it's a big downgrade from TTN but I still think it's a super fun album, great guitars and drums and I actually love Cove's vocals on it. It just has a lot of kinda weak choruses. 12. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me; Don't really need to say anything about this band/album. 13. Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope; Super fun and creative album, love her song writing and vocals. Probably my favourite of hers too. 14. Hellogoodbye - Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!; This is one that keeps growing on me over the years, the electronics on here are so fun and Forrest has always had such a great sense of melody. "Here (In Your Arms)" is a fucking classic. 15. Cute is What We Aim For - The Same Old Blood Rush; I know a lot of people hate this one but I find it a lot of fun, the melodies just hit me right and the lyrics while ridiculous have always seemed fun to me. 16. Damien Rice - 9; Big step down from O but still has some fantastic songs. I'd say I really love about half of it and relistening to it this week made me really want a new record from him. 17. Chad Perrone - Used to Dream; It's a really good first solo record but it pales in comparison to the work he'd just done with Averi and the solo stuff he would make in the future. This still has some really fantastic songs on it though. 18. Thursday - A City By the Light Divided; Probably my favourite Thursday album. I've never been the biggest fan of them but the sound on here really works for me. "Into the Blinding Light" is easily my favourite song of theirs. 19. This Day & Age - The Bell & The Hammer; Really lovely sounding record, Jeff has a great voice and while it does lose me a bit from time to time there's a lot of great moments. 20. Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child; I've never really clicked with this one like I know a lot of people have but I still really like it. "Sleeper 1972" stands above everything else on the album by a significant margin for me though.
1. Fightstar - Grand Unification Pt 1 2. My Chemical Romance - Sleep 3. Copeland - Love Affair 4. mewithoutYou - Wolf Am I! (And Shadow) 5. John Mayer - Slow Dancing in a Burning Room 6. Joshua Radin - Sundrenched World 7. The Format - Oceans 8. McFly - Bubble Wrap 9. Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms) 10. Underoath - A Moment Suspended in Time 11. Manchester Orchestra - Sleeper 1972 12. Boys Like Girls - Hero/Heroine 13. Brand New - You Won't Know 14. Regina Spektor - Samson 15. Cute is What We Aim For - Finger Twist & Split 16. Damien Rice - 9 Crimes 17. Justin Timberlake - (Another Song) All Over Again 18. Chad Perrone - Reinvent 19. Thursday - Into the Blinding Light 20. Saosin - I Never Wanted To Favourite songs of the year.
Okay so I don't think I have ever heard of Fightstar but they sure are popping up on quite a few lists .... gonna be checking that one out today. Were they part of a specific scene / have any airplay at the time, or?
That Timberlake song isn't the one I usually see pulled out from that album, but it's my favorite as well.
Such a great sound to it. I've never clicked with the full album like a lot of people have but that song might be my favourite of his in general.
They're a British band and not entirely sure what scene they were in but I know they've played with bands like Funeral for a Friend, Biffy Clyro, Enter Shikari. They're influenced by stuff like Deftones and Mono. For me they just take the best of all of their influences and make a perfect combination.
Today's list: 1. MewithoutYou- Brother, Sister 2. RX Bandits- ...And the Battle Begun 3. Murder By Death- In Bocca al Lupo My old list is bizarre. You can tell senior in high school, home with mono/pneumonia Henry had a lot of time on his hands and was a true try hard. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/ecirht/best_of_06/1/
He's notoriously hit or miss for me, that album included. But yeah, that sound really works for him. Would love a full album in that more classic-leaning style, if he ever felt inclined to do that.
1. Manchester Orchestra - I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child 2. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist 3. Silversun Pickups - Carnavas 4. Saosin - Saosin 5. Alexisonfire - Crisis 6. Mastodon - Blood Mountain 7. mewithoutyou- Brother, Sister 8. Thursday - A City by the Light Divided 9. The Format - Dog Problems 10. Underoath - Define the Great Line
Pretty much what @SpyKi said - they were grouped in with the British heavy, melodic rock bands of the mid-noughties. Post-hardcore, were sometimes put in emo early on but they weren't really an emo band. Lots of Deftones, Silverchair, Mono, some Pantera riffs on the later stuff. I think Grand Unification's their best full length.
Totally missed Fucked Up’s Hidden World when I was looking at albums. Fucked Up is by far the best punk band of this century. Just the amount of music and quality is unmatched.
yeah Hidden World is probably my least favorite LP of theirs but they’re pretty much thee perfect punk band
I never could get totally into Man Orch but Golden Ticket would make my best songs of 2006 list. Really hits the intersection of that kind of emo but with a 90sish melody so well. Separate thought, but Sam's Town is such a weirdly uneven album. The good songs on it, which I'd say are about half, are outstanding. The rest of the album is beyond forgettable.
Top 3 For The Thread 01. The Roots - Game Theory My favorite album by them. I remember byuing it with tips I made by working in the family restaurant that day and listening to it on the way home. I still remember the exact moment that my mom pulled onto the freeway while Long Time came on in my headphones. 02. Snoop Dogg - The Blue Carpet Treatment My favorite Snoop Dogg album. 03. Aventura - God's Project A perfect fusion of R&B and bachata. Albums I Loved That I Have Anecdotes About: Jim Jones - Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product of my Environment) For my 07' birthday, my girlfriend (now fiancé) gave me a customised We Fly High t-shirt because I was so obsessed with that song. Dem Franchize Boyz - On Top of Our Game My best friend and I still know every word to the Oh I Think They Like Me Remix. We were really sad when Buddie died three years ago. Remy Ma - There's Something About Remy I ordered this in a CD store in Amsterdam because I could not find it anywhere in the city. It took months to arrive. A few years ago Remy mentioned in an interview that the label ordered way too few copies and tanked the album. Now I know why I had such problems. Public Enemy & Paris - Rebirth of a Nation This is a very interesting album in Hip Hop history, because all the lyrics that Chuck D is rapping (and he does most of the rapping) on this album were written by Paris. It wasn't a secret either, it was the whole point, which is what makes it unique. Not really an anecdote I guess. LL Cool J - Todd Smith I bought this CD during a school trip and opened it in a restaurant in which we are all having pizza. The prettiest girl in my class came over, took the CD, took out the booklet, found a picture on which LL doesn't have a shirt on (which is never a hard thing to do to be fair) and licked it, all while standing next to our table. How's that for a random anecdote? Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury The slogan of my marketing agency is literally Keys Open Doors, so I guess you could say it stayed with me. Ne-Yo - In My Own Words I was sitting in class when someone randomly shouted "I'M SO SICK OF SO SICK, EVERYBODY HAS IT ON THEIR FUCKING MYSPACE". She was wrong, of course: one can't ever get sick of So Sick, or the remix with LL. More Albums I Love: Fat Joe - Me, Myself & I Young Jeezy - The Inspiration Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead J Dilla - Donuts Black Milk - Popular Demand Juvenile - Reality Check T.I. - King Ghostface Killah - Fishscale / More Fish Mobb Deep - Bloody Money Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later Shawna - Block Music Young Joc - New Joc City Rick Ross - Port of Miami Method Man - 4:21... The Day After Obie Trice - Second Round's On Me Outkast - Idlewild Lloyd Banks - Rotten Apple Birdman & Lil Wayne - Like Father, Like Son Beyonce - B'Day Akon - Konvicted Donell Jones - Journey Of A Gemini Papa Roach - The Paramour Sessions P.S. It's not on any of these albums, but it absolutely needs a mention in a post I make about 2006: Busta Rhymes - Touch It (Remix).
In 2006 or 7 I definitely had Boys Like Girls' The Great Escape as my Myspace song in an attempt to impress this girl I had a crush on who I knew adored them. I don't think she could have cared less
