Absolutely legendary. Thrice leveled up so much with Vheissu. It still gives me chills thinking about the first time I heard this album - it's hard to pick really, "Red Sky", "The Earth Will Shake", and "Atlantic" are easy choices to pick for standout tracks, but "For Miles" is probably still my favorite. Just wonderful. Really glad to see it getting some top votes in these first few pages.
I was thinking about this the other day, going through boxes upon boxes of CDs I’ll have bought at this age, and not really quite sure how I did it. I guess it helps that literally 100% of the little money I had was expendable, didn’t have any obligations elsewhere, so could spend it all on whatever nonsense I wanted.
Lmao there is also a negative correlation between me having a new car and insurance payment and the number of CDs I was able to purchase to load up said CD changer.
if it has to be a scene band for whatever dumb reason, you could do a lot worse this year than vheissu
1. The National - Alligator 2. Kanye - Late Registration 3. Broken Social Scene - s/t Honorable mentions: Sufjan - Illinois Bright Eyes Wide Awake & Digital Ash (former is better overall, second is more interesting at its best) Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase Andrew Bird - Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs Wolf Parade - Apologies Animal Collective - Feels Starting Line - Based on a True Story Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree LCD Soundsystem - s/t best songs list for this year would be ridiculous. Not making my album list but feel like Modern Girl by Sleater Kinney deserves some love here as well.
In Your Honor also doesn’t make enough “good Foo Fighters” lists, at least disc 1 is essential in my book unless we are grading in the strictest sense.
1. A Wilhelm Scream - Ruiner 2. Minus the Bear - Menos el Oso 3. Millencolin - Kingwood 4. Propagandhi - Potemkin City Limits 5. No Use for a Name - Keep them Confused 6. Gatsby’s American Dream - Volcano 7. Reel Big Fish - We’re not Happy ‘Til you’re not Happy 8. Days Away - Mapping an Invisible World 9. Suicide Machines - War Proffiteering is Killing Is All 10. Coheed - Good Apollo
Everyone who got into Jeff Rosenstock on Worry should return to the two BTMI releases this year, some of his best songs are on them!
buying CDs in 2005 is... not a weird thing, digital music sales were barely a thing yet, what do you think people were consuming music through in 2005?
What are the rules on double albums? Like, can we vote for both double albums in a slot? Or must they be separated?
Definitely can be a single slot.... and/or I don't think there are strict rules on this. I even put SOAD's Mezmerize/Hypnotize in a single slot even though they were released months apart.
Speaking of CDs lol if you recall, the album jackets for that one actually fit into each other nicely to create *gasp* a double album!
Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase Gojira - From Mars To Sirius Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck It's hardly unusual for BoC to make warm and inviting records but I think The Campfire Headphase might actually be my favourite. It feels a little more organic, a little spacier in some ways but then also with more structure. The guitar additions are sweet - the meloncholy effected guitar line on Chromakey Dreamcoat is so simple and infectious, it can stick in my head all day pretty easily. The mixture of beats and the soundscapes - genuine soundscapes not just synth swelling - are so ethereal and soothing but grounded enough to stop it floating away into nothingness. Unlike the M83 album that came out in 2005, which I find pretty cloying and trying too hard to sound epic, this has a real grace and restraint about it. I can stick this on any time. I think Gojira are probably the best metal band of the last twenty years but this album is still my favourite. It's where for me they found the sweet spot between the most crushing heaviness done in the most hypnotising way. Unbelievably tight performances, huge, mesmeric songs. Almost perfect. The self-titled Holy Fuck is a pretty breathless, pummelling, scuzzy, lo-fi record that is more likely to make me want to dance than almost any other album. The fusion of the live feel element and the electronics is cool but it's really the rhythms that jump out at me when I listen to it. Honourable mentions: Harold Budd - Avalon Sutra Oceansize - Everyone Into Position Armor For Sleep - What To Do When You Are Dead Reuben - Very Fast, Very Dangerous Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Alatt Született Boom Bip - Blue Eyed In The Red Room
1. Motion City Soundtrack: Commit This To Memory 2. Panic! At the Disco: A Fever You Can't Sweat Out 3. Sufjan Stevens: Illinois Commit This To Memory is in my top 3 albums of all time so it's a no brainer. AFYCSO is such a cool, unique album. I still love it every time I put it on. It scratches an itch that truly nothing else can. It was also the first album I put on my first iPod. 4. Chiodos: All's Well That Ends Well 5. The Academy Is...: Almost Here 6. Paramore: All We Know Is Falling 7. Fall Out Boy: From Under the Cork Tree 8. Carrie Underwood: Some Hearts 9. Kanye West: Late Registration 10. Bayside: Bayside All's Well That Ends Well is so close to top 3, and Chiodos was such an important and formative band for me. It's really a 3a and 3b with Sufjan. I heard Santi first and thought it was so bad - when my friend recommend this I was like no way but I listened and fell in love. I like Santi now too. So much nostalgia from this year. Others I love: Against Me!: Searching For A Former Clarity Death Cab For Cutie: Plans LCD Soundsystem: LCD Soundsystem 30 Seconds To Mars: A Beautiful Lie Silverstein: Discovering the Waterfront Circa Survive: Juturna The Mountain Goats: Sunset Tree System of a Down: Mezmerize/Hypnotize (but if I'm picking one I'm definitely partial to Mezmerize)
