Once again: While I did not listen to tons of rock before 2005, I'm pretty sure it was the year in which I stopped caring about any new rock releases at all. That only changed once I joined this site. Top 10: 01. Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi 02. Common - Be 03. Kanye West - Late Registration 04. Thank you for reminding me that Chroma came out in 2005. I still rage to this album in the car at least once a month, lol.
I forgot that was 2005. I put it on my list now. It got a lot of shit, but I thought it was a really cool project and I listened to it a lot. I still occasionally go back to some songs on there. "If I was in Brooklyn and B.I. was still alive In 2006, it might sound like this"
1. Kamelot - The Black Halo 2. Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself 3. Death Cab for Cutie - Plans Absolutely stacked year. Might be the most albums I love in any single year. The Black Halo is the second half of the concept from my 2003 number one. Incredible album, fantastic vocals and storytelling. Imogen Heap's songwriting and voice just hits me in a way that few artists do and I think the sound she created on Speak for Yourself is stll pretty unique. I really love the production and all the cool electronic stuff she does. It's an album that just keeps growing on me with time as well. Plans is my second favourite Death Cab album and has probably my two favourite songs they ever made with the incredible back to back of "What Sarah Said" and "Brothers on a Hotel Bed". Those two alone would make me want to vote for it but the rest of the album is fantastic as well. Really love the lyrics and overall sound. Honourable mentions; 4. Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This to Memory; It hurts not to have this one in my top three considering how much I love it. Some of my favourite lyrics ever are on this album and the songs are all so damn good. Big improvement over an already fantastic debut. They really perfected their sound on here. 5. Acceptance - Phantoms; Pretty perfect pop rock record. Jason's vocals/melodies just hit me right. Never get tired of singing along to this album. I'm always on the lookout for shit that kinda sounds like this album lol. 6. Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy; The songwriting on this album is so impressive to me, Will Sheff is such a great lyricist and the music always fits what he's singing perfectly. It has a great mix of softer songs based around acoustic guitar, horns and strings, and more aggressive/upbeat tracks. 7. Silverstein - Discovering the Waterfront; Such a fun album, peak Silverstein for me. Great melodies, fun heavier sections, the screams are way better than their first record and there's not a bad song on here. 8. Copeland - In Motion; Another big step up for one of my favourite bands. They start to move towards their more distinct vibe on this one and their songwriting gets tighter and more interesting. Aaron Marsh has one of my favourite voices in music, this being so low shows how amazing this year is. 9. The Birthday Massacre - Violet; I love the sound of this album so much, I feel like they made something pretty unique and special that perfectly suits my tastes. Playful synth melodies mixed with heavy guitars and sinister lyrics. I really love the playfulness in Chibi's vocals too. 10. McFly - Wonderland; I think this is a big step up from their first record and genuinely a pretty fantastic pop rock album. The use of orchestration throughout is super well done and the songs are more interesting and well written. I think it's pretty mature for some teenagers and "She Falls Asleep" is one of the best things they ever wrote. It was also my favourite album of 2005 in 2005 lol. 11. Panic! at the Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out; I genuinely love this album, there's still nothing else that really sounds like it. Great mix of electronics, pop rock and some cabaret influence too. I've always been a huge fan of Brendon's voice and melodies and Ryan's lyrics are definitely interesting and unique. 12. Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal; Another really great pop rock record, love the melodies on here. I wish there was more music like this these days. 13. Epica - Consign to Oblivion; Fantastic symphonic metal record that is a bit less focused on growls than their other records and lets Simone lead a bit more which I'm a big fan of. It also has one of my all time favourite songs on there "Trois Vierges", a beautiful duet with Roy Khan of Kamelot. 14. Kanye West - Late Registration; Takes everything I loved about The College Dropout and just enhances it. More truly fantastic production and some really great song topics and verses. "Hey Mama" might be my favourite Kanye song. 15. Mae - The Everglow; Really love the sound on this one, it feels got great vibes and melodies throughout. There's something magical about it, another album in that vein of pop rock that I just never get sick of, 2005 was a great year for this stuff. 16. Nightmare of You - Nightmare of You; Sounds like The Smiths if they were a scene band. It's fucking great. Really love the lyrics and melodies, great jangly guitars and fun synths. 17. Thrice - Vheissu; Pretty easily the best Thrice album imo. It has the best of everything they ever did, working in more experimentation sonically while still keeping some of the aggression and heaviness of the earlier records. The lyrics are great and it's the best Dustin has ever sounded. 18. Averi - Drawn to Revolving Doors; Chad Perrone is one of my favourite songwriters and this is the first record of his that I really love. There's some great songwriting on here, really fun pop rock tunes with a lot of saxophone throughout if you're as into that as I am. 19. Son of Dork - Welcome to Loserville; Kinda like a third Busted album since they broke up and James Bourne went off and did this. Sounds a lot like Busted and has some really fun pop songwriting on it. 20. Paramore - All We Know Is Falling; This has always been my least favourite Paramore album but I liked it more than I remembered when re-listening to it. Hayley's vocals are fantastic and I really love the sound they had on this album. "Never Let This Go" might be my favourite song of theirs. 21. Thirty Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie; This is one I used to really love but fell off quite a bit over the years. Listening to it again for this though I actually think it's still really good, I love the vocals and the sound just works for me. 22. The All-American Rejects - Move Along; Just as catchy and fun as their debut but I think it's more consistant. A lot of great songs on here. 23. Cartel - Chroma; Super fun pop punk record with really great vocals, the two closing tracks in particular are fantastic. 24. Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree; The first half of this is fantastic, if the whole thing was as good as the first 6 songs this would be much higher on my list, but like all Fall Out Boy albums it's really inconsistant for me and falls off hard after that. 25. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness; Like FOB, I think this has a fantastic start but falls off in the second half. I love it up until "The Suffering", after that it loses me.
Truly wild year for me looking back. There's probably been less than 10 albums in the last five years that I like as much as Vheissu which is only at number 17 for this year.
1. Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said 2. Motion City Soundtrack - Hold Me Down 3. Epica - Trois Vierges 4. Kamelot - Memento Mori 5. McFly - She Falls Asleep 6. Silverstein - Call It Karma 7. Paramore - Never Let This Go 8. Copeland - Don't Slow Down 9. Acceptance - Glory/Us 10. The Birthday Massacre - Violet 11. Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin Down 12. Kanye West - Hey Mama 13. Okkervil River - So Come Back, I Am Waiting 14. Imogen Heap - Daylight Robbery 15. Mae - Someone Else's Arms 16. Averi - Harwich 17. Coldplay - Fix You 18. Anberlin - (The Symphony of) Blasé 19. Panic! at the Disco - It's Time to Dance 20. The All-American Rejects - Dance Inside 21. Common - Be (Intro) 22. Thirty Seconds to Mars - Battle of One 23. Cartel - A 24. Sufjan Stevens - Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois 25. Circa Survive - Act Appalled 26. Coheed and Cambria - Always & Never 27. Thrice - For Miles 28. Nightmare of You - My Name is Trouble 29. Bright Eyes - Road to Joy 30. Jack's Mannequin - Dark Blue Favourite songs, I'm sure I'm probably forgetting something.
Honestly I should probably have Palahniuks Laughter at number one but I forget that was 2005 because I dont rank it with my 2005 albums since a lot of it is on Grand Unification which will be high on my 2006 list.
Bahhhhh forgot about the Copeland record from this year. Doesn't quite crack my top 30, but edited for honorable mentions. Thanks @SpyKi
That EP's the only Fightstar thing I really listen to now. Palahnuik's Laughter and that specific version of Mono are both great.

ahhhh shit already need to make an edit, a BIG one for me Jason Mraz - Mr. A-Z needs to be added to my list, such a fucking great album that never got the attention it deserved
Pat is going to be so disappointed in all of us lol if he thought that 01-04 were bad for swinging heavily towards 'scene' stuff over more typically critically acclaimed albums, it's only gonna get worse (or better for some of us) from here.
Going to take me awhile to write up my picks for this year. I was 14 for most of this year and have no idea how I afforded as many albums as I did.
2005 mix. In this era, I was primarily making mixes for myself to play in my car that did not consist of music I already had on CD, so it was mostly b-sides and other things I didn't have on disc already.
1-Thrice-Vheissu 2-Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree 3-Foo Fighters - In Your Honor Very Honorable Mentions My Morning Jacket - Z Gojira - From Mars to Sirius Circa Survive - Juturna Death Cab for Cutie - Plans Wolfmother-Wolfmother
