The lyrics on that album hold up incredibly well for me. They're still some of my favourite lyrics ever.
People voting for albums they love in a poll that asks them to vote for albums they love is not "diluting the results." That's literally the purpose of the thread. Like, do we seriously have to have these conversations every week? Get over it! People still like these albums! Who cares if it's (what you deem to be) a "nostalgia vote" or not? People voting for different albums that were super formative to them during an important period of their lives is way more interesting to me than The Beatles winning every year because they're one of the three or four common reference points everyone has from the '60s.
Plus I'm voting for the albums I like more now. There's very little music out there that speaks to me like Motion City Soundtrack and I've heard a good chunk of the "best" music of all time.
also funny that this is easily my favourite winner so far and I didn't even vote for it lol. 2005 was a special time for music.
I’m all for nostalgia votes winning I just thought it was funny to see MCS be the one to soften phaynes
It just feels odd to call them nostalgia votes when I feel like if I had never heard CTTM and it came out today it would be my favourite album in years. It hits so much of what I love about music but I'm also not sure whether that's partially because it helped shape my musical tastes.
There seems be to be annoying conversation that pops up in each of these threads bemoaning that the more "important" album doesn't win over the more loved. While I don't agree with every result, I'm happy that people are placing emphasis on the music that means/meant the most of them vs. what is considered the more critically correct/influential album.
Sorry to offend. Maybe dilute was a poor choice of words. As I said, I’ve done nostalgia votes too and will do more too once we get closer to my formative musical years. Maybe I misunderstood the point of this exercise since I only jumped in on 2003.
I listened to Commit This to Memory for the first time in full in a while this week, and enjoyed it! I used to like Motion City Soundtrack quite a bit around the time this album was released - they were one of the first bands I saw live too I think. Would have seen them, Fall out Boy, Biffy Clyro, Funeral for a Friend and Lostprophers (errr....) all in a couple of months window in the summer of 2005 ish. I enjoyed the album still - I think it's sharp lyrically, and while I'm not super into the vocal style now, I think there are some great tracks here. LGFUAD, Resolution and Hold Me Down in particular were standouts - all really great and evocative lyrics. There's some good fun pop-rock here elsewhere too, stuff like "Everything is Alright" and "When You're Around", which are pretty cookie-cutter, but done well. May not be back to this in a massive hurry in full, but an enjoyable album!
Everything is Alright and When You’re Around are both really great (even if the transition to the bridge in the former is the single laziest moment in the history of power pop). Listened to the first half this morning will finish it out at some point today.
Looking this up on Setlist.FM and this isn't even close to being true ha. Nearly a two year gap between some of these shows from 2004 - 2006. For some reason I'd condensed this down in my mind as 2005. I'm a completely unreliable source on my own memories. Useless.
LMAO I always do the same thing and check setlist.fm before I wax poetic on old concert memories. My memory seems to be right about .... 70% of the time probably but still. It's funny how we sort things out in our brain and how they get a bit more muddled (or even exaggerated) over time lol.
