MORE forgotten ones for me! Thanks for always digging deep. Definitely want to revisit those OAR and Augustana records this week.

All of these were big eighth/ninth grade records for me. The Augustana one really holds up, and I'm surprised at how much I still enjoy the O.A.R. record. The Rob and Lifehouse records are more hit or miss, but I've still got a lot of fondness for them.

  4. Forty Hour Train Back to Penn is a banger of an album. I have the lyrics to Jamaica Next tattooed on my arm, and hanging in my apartment.

My favorite Augustana Album is Can't Hurt, Can't Love. This one will absolutely be in my top 3 for 2008.

The Academy Is... gets better, IMO. I see no reason why you wouldn't prefer Santi or Fast Times when we get to those years.

OTOH, I completely disagree lol. Nothing touches Almost Here.

100% this. The songs on that album are just absolutely nuts, no other bands were writing songs structured like that, so much nuance every corner of the album and catchy as hell to boot. Definitely their best album

I'm not sure if it's "unpopular" but I actually like their first album even better, Destination: Beautiful

Each Academy Is... album got just a little bit worse lol Almost Here is an absolute classic for me. Santi is still really good but has some songs I don't love. Fast Times is about half and half for me.

But seeing them play Almost Here was probably my favorite anniversary tour I ever went to (partially because I had never seen them at all vs. someone like Motion City playing CTTM where I'd seen most the songs live already)

For this year, I decided to go with what do I currently like best. There are absolutely albums in the Very honorable mentions category that would be #1 back in 2008 if I ranked them then.

    1. Gatsby's American Dream - Volcano

    • This album absolutely holds up for me. Angular but catchy, weird but mostly accessible. My favorite GAD by a good margin (The Money Pit is second), I never get tired of singing along to The Guilt Engine.

    2. Gorillaz - Demon Days

    • In which Damon Albarn perfects the formula. Besides the inescapable singles, I think this is likely the most consistent Gorillaz album and both the music and visuals were figurative meth to my child brain.

    3. Jack's Mannequin - Everything In Transit

    • I didn't get into this album until I moved to SoCal in 2017, but I'm so glad I did. Every song is a hit and the lyrics are a bit juvenile, but relatable. Plus, it's fun to listen to when you're driving in/by the places he sings about.

    VERY Honorable Mentions

Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This to Memory

    • Love what I love on this album, but there's always been 4-5 tracks I could live without. Hold Me Down still gives me the feels for sure.

    Alkaline Trio - Crimson

    • The cracks begin to show! But boy do they sound good. The last consistent Trio album for 13 years, I love this album a lot.

Panic! At the Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

    • This was tough to keep out of the top 3. One of my most listened to albums of all time. Every song hits except the intermission (and I feel weird listening to Lying Is the Most Fun). A bummer we never got to see the band travel down this road even further.

Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree

    • Not one of my favorite FOB albums, but an undeniably foundational album for my young ears. This is where I discovered them and subsequently fell in love with them.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

    • Like @phaynes12, this is my fav White Stripes album. It mixes up the formula and truly proves that underneath the fuzz has been great songs all along.

The All-American Rejects - Move Along

    • They just don't make records this massive anymore. The band leveled up in every way here and created some singles that so far are standing the test of time.

Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal

    • Another one that was tough to leave out of the top 3. Not quite my favorite Anberlin album, but it has a lot of my favorite songs of theirs. I knock this one a bit because I think it has some of their most forgettable deep cuts.

The Academy Is... - Almost Here

    • Truly a product of the time, some of the lyrics are a little rough now, but the melodies still hit.

    Kind of Honorable Mentions

The Starting Line - Based On A True Story

    • I'm gonna tear this albums ass up like we just got married.

    Bayside - Bayside

    • This is where the Bayside story starts for me. Decent album, but they would go on to bigger and better things.

    Ludo - Broken Bride

    • A bizarre little EP that shows off the group's versatility.

The Click Five - Greetings From Imrie House

    • Can't deny the singles here, even if I was ashamed to like this album as a kid.

    Beck - Guero

    • A fun Beck album!

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
    • The production has always bothered me on this album, I hate how the guitars sound underwater on side 1. Some great Foos songs to be had though.

Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze

    • Great album that is definitely too long.

    Weezer - Make Believe

    • HATED this album when I bought it because I liked Beverly Hills. I still don't love it, but it is not their nadir.

    OK Go - Oh No

    • There are other songs on here besides the treadmill one! Some of them are a lot of fun!

Fountains of Wayne - Out-of-State Plates

    • A bit too dense, but some excellent b-sides here.

    Acceptance - Phantoms

    • I get a little lost in this album on the back half, but the bangers bang.

Jimmy Eat World - Stay On My Side Tonight

    • Imagine releasing this after Futures. Jimmy Eat World at the end of their absolute tear.

Fun fact that i'm not sure most know is that Jake Clemons, who is now the sax player for the E street band, used to be a member of Mae.

Just finished the Mae album and man...what a journey that was. absolutely beautiful!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Definitely a bit of a time capsule record, so It's great that you are able to appreciate it 17 years later. I personally feel like it holds up really well but I also understand that his vocal style is not for everyone.

Was one of only two or so songs on Singularity I thought were anywhere near anything on Everglow.
That album was such a letdown for me.

Wow - another glaring oversight for me - Silversun Pickups first EP, Pikul.

Probably because it was not until early 2007 that Carnavas really even caught any actual mainstream attention, which is when I first heard of the band.

But this is a stone cold classic - have to put in Honorable Mentions for '05 for me.

Singularity was a huge letdown. One of the biggest disappointments I’ve ever had with a band along with that first Mayday Parade album without Jason and The Suckerpunch Show
