1. Old School 2. The United States of Leland 3. Matchstick Men Other standouts: 11:14, Mystic River, 21 Grams, School of Rock, Kill Bill, Monster, Big Fish
Ending was good. I’ll sit with it but it left me a bit cold. Feels like one of those I probably had to see at a younger age. Lot of stuff that did not age well at all. Maybe I could forgive it more with some nostalgia attached.
The running joke about Rs and Ls being swapped. It is as crude as the ending to A Christmas Story, and a through line of the movie.
I see people criticizing it for the age gap or whatever and I think that is silly. The characters are at opposite ends of the spectrum on purpose, so that the commonality of feeling adrift and alone can be shown from different stages of life. I like the core themes behind the movie and I think that they are occasionally executed well, but much of the comic relief falls flat. The intention is to have our protagonists feel like outsiders in a strange land, but a lot of the humor comes from a “wow look how strange this culture/these people are” perspective, rather than making the American the butt of the joke. Also was really giving #GardenState vibes if I’m being honest. A better made movie but two peas…
I said a lot, not all! I did laugh at Farris’s line about her dad being anorexic, but she felt like she was in a different movie.
apparently modeled after cameron diaz/a shot at her after she worked with spike jonze on being john malkovich
That was such a strange one. I didn't like The Bling Ring but you could see it was a Sofia Coppola movie. That one was something you expect a director to do when they're broke.
It really shouldn’t effect the film but the accusations and Bill Murray being a creep made the age gap criticisms resonate with me a bit more. Still think it’s a solid movie though
