Speaking of - that does remind me I was going to ask you yesterday what you had "initially thought" Minus the Bear sounded like, since you said it wasn't what you expected. And glad you seemed to enjoy it. They have all-timers for me coming up in '05 and '07, respectively.
EVERYONE should love that Nada Surf album as well as the following ..... 4 or 5 albums that followed it. Another incredibly consistent band that got better in their second decade.
Idk I think I checked them out back on AP like 2010/2011? Idk I thought they were a boring indie band with really annoying vocals lol. I might have got them mixed up with Grizzly Bear who are another band I haven't listened to in like a decade but I also think I might have listened to Omni. Also, Nada Surf are another one, I always thought they were super bland but I really liked that album from this year. I think I actually did check out that record originally though ages ago and the sound was pretty similar to what I remember I can just appreciate it a lot more now.
Right on .... Yeah I've heard a few people say vocals were off-putting for MtB, but I don't really hear it. If anything he has an oddly 'normal' singing voice. Omni was considered their first 'misstep' at the time but I still really love it.
yeah I really liked the vocals on Highly Refined Pirates. Not sure if they're different to what I heard before or if it's just that the range of vocalists I enjoy now is much bigger than it used to be. Either way, I'm happy to have a new band to check out as we go through the years, haha.
I have listened to the vast majority of his discography on your rec so that’s reasonable. I think I just have that and two Marvelous 3 records left for full-lengths. I was very anti-Maroon 5 until I saw them co-headline with Counting Crows while touring the second album and they really impressed me live. Obviously I’ve heard plenty of songs from that Avril record having been a living human at the time, but I just never got to the full length.
Self-Centered has aged a little less gracefully than, say, Letters, but it's still got a metric ton of melodic spark, and all the charisma and charm you'd expect from him. Songs About Jane is far and away my favorite Maroon 5 album. I think you'd dig it, especially the more exploratory second half. Let Go is my favorite Avril album. And since I know you love Under My Skin, I can't imagine you wouldn't love this one.
The run of Let Go, The Weight Is A Gift, and Lucky is sneakily one of the best three-album runs of the 2000s.
I think Let Go is still my favorite Avril album, but Under The Skin is great too. And The Best Damn Thing
Agreed. Lucky is the one that made them really catch on for me after only knowing "Popular" when I was younger, then I worked backwards. I still go to that album on wintry days, it soundtracked so many snowy walks to classes when I was in college. I also love the follow-up to that one, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy - it features Doug Gillard, formerly of Guided By Voices, as a full-time member (he started touring with them in the Lucky era, I believe). The last few albums haven't been AS good, but still quite enjoyable.
Just found a copy of Lucky on vinyl, and that felt...well, lucky! Really, really great record. I like Stars a lot too, but I put it cut below the three 2000s records.
Singles collection so it doesn't really count for 2002 but there was plenty of good post-rock during this time period. Tarentel certainly one of those bands.
1. Thrice - The Illusion of Safety 2. Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights 3. Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends
I don’t know why, but I thought Let Go came out in 2003 That definitely takes the .3 spot from TBS. Also honorable mention: Botch - An Anthology of Dead Ends
tell all your friends wins with 36. songs for the deaf had 27. a rush of blood to the head 18. you should be ashamed.
