It's so dumb to look back and realize how much I liked those Michelle Branch/Avril/Vanessa Carlton/Kelly Clarkson songs/albums at the time and how I was probably in denial about that for years. I went back to that Branch album a bunch last year when it turned 20, though, and it really holds up. Same with the follow-up. And her comeback album from a few years ago is pretty great too.
A Thousand Miles is such a jam.
I hated Creed back in the day and I still don’t care to listen to them but I always had to bite my tongue whenever I played “What If” off the Scream soundtrack, an actual good song.
A Thousand Miles is such a jam.
Legitimate question about that Michelle Branch album. I liked the two singles a lot but never heard anything else from it. Is the rest of it along the same lines? I ask because I really enjoyed the Pale Waves album from last year and, if I like that, there's no reason I can't also like this MIchelle Branch release.
Honestly, I really loved Weathered back in the day. One of my first CDs. I haven't listened to it in ages, and those guys are kind of a punchline for a lot of reasons, but that record definitely meant something to me when I was 12! I wish they'd do another album. I dug the 2014 one. If you like the singles, you'll enjoy the album. The singles are the best songs (her second record, Hotel Paper, is a bit more evenly balanced between some great singles and some great album tracks) but the singles are also, like, half the record, so. Pale Waves is more Avril than Michelle Branch, but definitely hearkens back to that era of teen pop.
Its a top 5 album for me all time, and one of the albums that initially drew me to roots music in the first place. I get the genre isn’t all that popular around this site, but shocked it hasn’t been mentioned at all in here.
Kind of unreal I didn't put this in my top three. The ominous opening guitar is one of my favourite starts to an album.
Kind of surprised also to not see any love/mention for the debut album from The National. Pretty clearly their 'least essential' work, but there's still quite a bit to like, and indicators of the greatness to come. "Son" in particular is a pretty standout track.

I have to say this was probably my favorite year of music. Was the last time we got an NSYNC album, John Mayer walked into my life, Aaliyah died, 9/11 happened and everything fucking changed.
Holy shit this just hit me hard in the feels. #truth I was a few weeks away from turning 16, but I somehow feel like the real problems of this ugly world hit me that day for the first time and everything changed indeed.
I will never ever ever forget that whole week after it happened. Radio was silent, TV channels were nothing but news. Music stopped for like 2 weeks really. It was fucking wild.
The Blueprint and Love & Theft both came out on 9/11. Rockin' the Suburbs too. And that Nickelback album.
when I said music stopped, I meant the radio stations weren't playing much music that first week...but obviously albums came out on that day.

@phaynes12 I'd appreciate it if you could once again ignore my #2 vote, as I'd like to not add to their tally.
They have a handful of songs that hold up, mostly because Mark Tremonti was actually a pretty creative rhythm guitarist. Even when I was the most into nu metal that I ever was, though, I thought they sucked at making albums. Sooooo much faceless filler.
