HV I tried and remember exactly nothing about it... I'll give them a try sometime later today... which one should I go for? also, listened to Feist's The Reminder last night for the first time in ages... really beautiful record
Tends to have their most upbeat stuff with generally catchier choruses (relatively speaking, they're not a pop band by any means but), probably matt's best vocals (I know they can turn off some people), I feel like it's a better starting point than HV, which is kinda weird
I find them terribly boring and overrated. But I find most of what's considered the "essential" 2000's "indie rock" terribly boring and overrated.
Boxer is definitely my favourite album by them but I don't love them nearly as much as a lot of people do. They have some fantastic songs though.
I was very bored by TWFM, not the best album for instrumental details. The lack thereof makes it feel more like just a low key pop record than an indie rock record
Lol oh hush it's one live video. And it's music influenced by everything we're discussing in here. Bet nobody even watched it anyway haha
Yeah. I mean I see why it's appreciated by a lot of National fans but I find it a less inspiring effort by the backing band than the previous 3 albums
Fair enough. I do think it's got some of their most interesting work though, musically. Graceless gives me heavy joy division vibes, I think I need my girl is about as perfect a pop song as this band could write. But I could see how you'd disagree
i actually haven't listened to the second as much as i should have (maybe i'll put that on the docket today) but the first one is just a truly special record
#2 doesn't hold a candle to #1 still very good and... my fav is #3 although it is clearly not their best/important album
El Pintor, while the best of their last three records, isn't even in the same ballpark as the first two.
I don't hear this at all. They came around at the same time and are very much a product of that time but their influences and respective sounds are pretty drastically different.
Hot Fuss was 2 years after Turn On the Bright Lights which was obviously hugely influential critically. I'm only talking about that guys vocals. He totally is trying to do Interpol impressions
Their voices don't sound anything alike. Flowers is much more dramatic and utilizes a much higher register than Banks, while not using falsetto as often as Banks. You're just wrong man.
Scrolling through the thread, there are a lot of bands that I really like that have been mentioned, though a lot of them would probably be put into other categories by most people. Of the ones that I think defined that "indie rock" sound (which is what it became in the 90's going into the 2000's, even if the bands weren't all independent) The ones I like: Broken Social Scene Cursive Death Cab For Cutie The New Pornographers The Postal Service The Shins Spoon Sufjan Stevens The Weakerthans The ones I can't stand: Arcade Fire Arctic Monkeys Bon Iver Franz Ferdinand Interpol Iron & Wine The Killers Kings of Leon The National The Strokes Vampire Weekend So maybe it's more even than I thought, but the bands I don't like definitely seem to get more (mainstream) love. And some albums I haven't seen mentioned: Both albums (and both EP's) by The Format Everything by Ted Leo Mates of State's Our Constant Concern Voxtrot's self-titled
