Definitely. I broke that one off for my summer playlist that year. There are a few other good songs, but it mostly just doesn’t work for me.
Ah thanks, I must have it sorted incorrectly in my Apple Music. Will need to update that. Yeah, you can go back and forth on White Pony vs. Hybrid Theory. I feel like I listened more to Hybrid Theory in that era which is why I gave it #1.
Lyrics from my number one album of the year: "And broke ass critics always got somethin' to say 'Bout how a n***a should flip his shit a different way The fuck you know 'bout hip hop, I'm LL Cool J, n***a" Words to live by.
I think I told this story before in some other thread (also edited into my post in this one), but G.O.A.T. is the first album I ever bought for myself, when I was still a real kid (it probably was in 2001, but maybe 2000). I picked it up on a whim, because the cover spoke to me. I wasn't looking for anything specific or even any specific genre. I wasn't into music like that at that point. It turned out being the reason I fell in love with Hip Hop (and music), which had (and has) such a huge impact on my life and personality. Among many other major things, I met my now-fiancé on a Hip Hop message board, when we were just teenagers living in different countries, which in turn led to so many other major things. It's hard to imagine who and where I would be if I hadn't randomly picked up this album on that day. I figured we're all music nerds here, so I thought that's a story worth sharing.
People still struggle when a band they like takes out their base instrument, especially when it's guitar. And you're right, Kid A's not that obtuse or difficult if you get over that.
I still think "Optimistic" and "How To Disapear Completely" could have fit somewhere on OK Computer. The only actually difficult/weird songs are the title track and, maybe, "The National Anthem". Everything else has a discernible melody if not at least some traditional song structure.
Definitely a great story! So wonderful how a shared love for music can bring people together even from a distance, I get it for sure.
the three albums I probably have listened to most from this year, though all at very different times in my life lol, and thus will make up my top 3, are.... 1. Alkaline Trio-Maybe I'll Catch Fire This was my least favorite Trio record for a long time, but I have since come around on it, especially as I began to prefer Dan over Matt, as this was a STRONG Dan album with those three songs. I guess She Took Him To The Lake is overlooked/probably seen as sappy but man did teenage me love that one when I discovered them haha. And of course Matt has some great songs on there too, including the classic Radio. But I didn't actaulyl get into this album/band until 2002/3ish, and this album was towards the bottom of my Alk 3 rankings until the last 5-8 years 2. The Marshall Mathers LP So I was 12 turning 13 and still really discovering what music I liked. My older cousin that I idolized was really into rap, specifically Wu Tang, but I was a bit too young for that. Well, then The Real Slim Shady came out while I was in 6th grade and that was that. I don't think I actually got the album until the next school year in 7th grade, when it became impossible to avoid The Way I Am and then Stan on radios. But yeah I listened to this album a LOT in middle school. Obviously, it has aged terribly for many different lyrics. 3. Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory I was, as I said, still trying to figure out my musical identity at the time. Eminem and rap had become my go to that year as stated, but then this album came out and I heard the singles. One STep Closer was too much rock/screaming for me, but I was still intrigued. Crawling was an ear worm and a half with that little riff/piano/whatever, then Papercut, and then of course In The End. Became obsessed with that song, played it on the marimbas in band all the time and my friend taught me it on piano and etc lol. I spent a LOT of 7th/8th grade listening to this as well. It was just "rap"-y enough for me at the time to not get all bent out of shape about the rock/screaming parts.
kid a is in the lead as expected but there is a shockingly close album in 2nd and it isn't stankonia, which is also surprising
1. The Avalanches: Since I Left You 2. Radiohead: Kid A 3. Dashboard Confessional: The Swiss Army Romance Runner Up: Green Day: Warning
No love for Machina II?!?! I kid, I kid, that album's recording/mastering quality is really difficult to make it through.
I don't mean to shit on your taste as everyone is entitled to like what they like but that SR-71 album.....that's one of those CD's that was VASTLY different from what the hit single indicated. Did you like the more mellow stuff they had on that album? I remember listening to it like, twice, and never bothering with it.
There are some great songs on Machina II.... Funny, I really should include it on my list, even though it just doesnt FEEL like a proper album because it's so hard to come across. Guess I can put it on Honorable Mentions. I remember I bought it off eBay or whatever the hell back then and all it was was a burned copy lol
vastly? I definitely don't agree with that at all, most of the album is totally in line with Right Now. There's not that much mellow stuff, and even the mellow stuff isn't that off brand or anything
I may need to go back and re-listen. I remember the first two tracks being slightly snotty pop-punkish and then the rest of it being more adult contemporary pop-rock. Their 2002 album, I think, hit more on the aggressive side.
