Meet Me In The Bathroom is essentially one big circle jerk. I like a lot of those NYC bands (and I live here) but the music press vastly overestimated that scene’s impact and relevancy.

I stopped reading meet me in the bathroom about 2/3 through because I got bored of how big of an asshole basically everyone came off as, but I would stop short of saying that the impact of that scene was overrated. Wouldn't it be fair to say indie rock was the biggest non country guitar genre of the last 20 years? I think the strokes and co are pretty important to that.

Nah. Emo/Warped Tour/“the scene” (whatever you want to call it) was much bigger and impactful. The rock critic establishment of NY, LA and the UK just never took it that seriously and thus it was never given as much press coverage outside of Alt Press and this website we’re all conversing on.

you are high off your own, and this website's, supply if you think warped tour was as big as a the new york music scene

"impact" is subjective and we can go back and forth on it, though really all that's happening is peoples' biases (including my own) showing, but no man, the emo scene was not "bigger" by any stretch of the imagination lol. any of the bands that had repeated headliners on Warped are smaller bands than the strokes and the national. the yeah yeah yeahs haven't put out any music at all in nearly a decade and they still pull in more monthly listeners than pretty much all of those bands except jimmy eat world/blink/fob. what on earth.

This post got me wondering about the top-selling non-country “guitar” records of the 2000s. Here’s what I found:

    The Beatles - 1 (lol)
    Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
    Evanescence- Fallen
Nickelback - All the Wrong Reasons
    Avril Lavigne - Let Go
    Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish…
    Creed - Weathered
    Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway
    Green Day - American Idiot
    Linkin Park - Meteora
3 Doors Down - The Better Life

That sounds about right, though I would have guessed a Coldplay album to be in there. Probably would be in Europe. Also maybe U2.

Both A Rush of Blood to the Head and All That You Can't Leave Behind are in the top 100 overall for the 2000s, so they were close. Others include Staind, Daughtry, Maroon 5, Matchbox Twenty, System of a Down, and John Mayer.

To follow on from the earlier threads I checked out the Mos Def and Ben Folds Five albums from this year and both were great. Really cool progressions from the last albums.

I also relistened to Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile which I wasn't a big fan of when I first heard it years ago. I like it a lot more now, really cool stuff.

Depends on how we're defining the scenes. The "NY" scene of The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, The Rapute, LCD Soundsystem, etc was big and a lot of those acts still get billed at festivals but in terms of commercial penetration, there's no question the likes of My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic! At The Disco were/are bigger. The emo bands, for lack of a better term, also did much better on commercial radio and, as pointed out many times, have continued to influence big pop stars like Olivia Rodrigo.

Also, the fact that the WWWY festival can do 3 days while the Just Like Heaven festival is a mere one (though they did two in 2019) supports my point.

all of these bands, with the exception of the rapture, would headline lolla/coachella/bonnaroo/riot fest etc.

you’re splitting hairs lol. you like emo more. it’s fine. i’m done with this convo

Look, I'm not trying to be argumentative but, seriously, if you think Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs or LCD Soundsystem can headline any of those big fests these days, you are mistaken. The Strokes is the last one that can do big numbers.

the last time LCD toured (admittedly five+ years ago), they did just that lol. they absolutely would still headline, bc they rarely ever tour. you are wrong, my guy. keep it movin’

edit: i was wrong, they toured in 2018, and headlined big fests that year as well

They headlined like every major festival on that return, including Coachella. LCD is fucking massive.

Yes, and 5 years ago is now a lifetime in terms of headliner status. Look, LCD even headlined a festival in their hometown in 2016 with sluggish ticket sales. I love LCD (risked getting Omicron to see them last month) and they...may...still be festival-headliner ready but I don't think they can fill the same size venues in 2022 vs. Fall Out Boy, PAramore, MCR, Panic At The Disco which speaks to the fandom that those acts were able to drum up. The Strokes are a big of a different beast since they haven't properly toured since, maybe, 2006 (tend to play scattered dates/festivals). While they can definitely fill arenas here in NYC, I don't know if they have the same kind of draw in Cincinnati. YYY's and Interpol are now both theater-level acts here in their hometown (Interpol is doing 2 nights at the King's Theater which is about 3k).

I understand this is a friendly argument and I love debating which bands are objectively bigger/more popular so if there's evidence I've missed, I'm all for it.

I think there’s a debate worth having about if say FOB is a big emo band or a band that is big because they arguably stopped being an emo band
