I had burned copy of Californiacation as a kid, it's one of the few albums from that time period that did not stand the test of time and never made it to my adult listening rotation.
Very much so. Not a lot of opportunity to talk about him around these parts. But those first 4 albums were a hell of a run. What's your favorite from him? I really go back and forth with Burn to Shine and Fight for Your Mind Bite me?
I had a collection of his songs I liked, a lot of easy stuff I tried to learn on the guitar and piano. He’s cool though.
maybe not popular opinion, but my favorite is actually Lifeline, underrated stuff on there but I think it's fucking great. Fight For Your Mind, Burn to Shine and Diamonds are all close after that, then Cruel World / Will To Live / Both Sides. Everything since Lifeline has been kinda.... not quite there for me though. "Amen Omen" live is one of those live moments that I'll never forget, a truly amazing live performance
Might finally be able to participate again. Next couple of years I’ll probably be riding hard on the pop recs. Gonna try and build a list a little bit later today but will definitely say right off the bat that Millennium is very much worth a full listen if you haven’t sat down with it yet.
I'm now picturing you getting really into playing lap steel. Lifeline is absolutely his best of the new millennium. It was an awesome comeback for the Criminals. That's a big part of what made me like him so much. I saw him on the Diamonds on the Inside tour and he played for like 3 hour until 1am and he was just a masterful live performer.
Also jumping on the Out of the Vein is the best Third Eye Blind album train. “Blinded” is probably my favorite of theirs with respect to “Motorcycle Drive By”
Also @irthesteve and I are texting about boybands and I’m gonna put together a playlist of deep cuts for him. Pretty relevant to this year so if anyone else is interested I can drop the link here once I put it together!
yeah the pop and mainstream rock output this year was really cool. agree with @OhTheWater’s post as well
I wish I could remember which song it was (it may have been one of the gospel ones from There Will Be a Light) but he did one song a capella with no mic and the crowd was so much in his palm that you could hear him in every corner of the club completely unplugged.
I've been meaning to get more into Ben Harper for years... he's one where I know quite a few songs, but never heard any full albums. Will listen to Burn To Shine for sure this week.
Idk, I kind of like it. It seems like we're going to have a mix of big "unique to this community" picks and more "consensus classic album" picks. For instance, Kid A probably walks away with 2000, but the next few years after that are likely to be more "scene-specific" winners. (I also just think Bleed American is a better, more interesting, more accomplished rock album in every possible way compared to Is This It, but we can debate that in a couple weeks!)
the spiciest take i’ve seen from craig in a minute. good. we’ve been agreeing too much lately bleed american is at best their fourth best record and features more skips than great tracks
the jimmy eat world live show is better than the strokes live show after clarity, the next three best albums combined from the two bands are strokes albums lol and new abnormal is better than anything from JEW since chase this light
though even the live show part used to be debatable. JEW in the futures era was worse live than any time i’ve seen the strokes. they’ve gotten so much better and jim seems to actually be taking care of himself now
I saw a terrible American Football show and was never able to get into them as a result. Like, so bad I almost walked out. Maybe just an off night or something, I’ll probably try and revisit them this week
