the strokes headlined governors ball in 2016, 15 years after the album came out. i cannot think of a fest that size, except maybe riot fest, where JEW would be anything above the top four lines of the festival bill. it is safe to say the strokes were bigger in 2001, 2016, and 2022.
Bigger band, for sure. Bigger album (if we consider sales statistics and streams) is closer but, yeah, I'd still give it to the Strokes. I'm not trying to argue that Jimmy Eat World's legacy is bigger than The Strokes, I'm arguing that the NYC "Rock Revival" scene and it's extensions were not as big/popular in the 00's as the media has led people to believe.
the killers - maybe the biggest band mentioned in this conversation - have more or less stated numerous times they wouldn’t exist without the strokes. as have the arctic monkeys, a bigger band than the killers. the strokes don’t have a lasting influence??? what??
I can probably do this (literally) all day haha. The Strokes definitely have listing influence but so do MCR/Fall Out Boy/Panic At The Disco. If the argument is merely The Strokes vs. Jimmy Eat World in terms of impact, then I 100% agree with you that The Strokes are the more influential/"important" band.
except, they were? the national has gotten exponentially bigger since that era. interpol has faded, for sure, but those first two albums are still touted by many outlets as some of the best of the decade. vampire weekend has had massive crossover and are bigger now than they’ve ever been. the yeah yeah yeahs aren’t really a band anymore but maps might be the single biggest song with the longest lasting impact of any of these bands. who gives a shit about the rapture or the hangers on bands of that scene, no one here is bringing up plain white t’s or anberlin or whatever to try to argue emo isn’t big anymore lol
One thing I agree with ya on Phil is that fenix tx was great. Another feather in the cap of 1999 as the pop punk peak (even if it’s basically a 98(?) rerelease.
We can overall besmirch the rapture, but they were fun. House of Jealous Lovers remains a total blast.
That's right I forgot. They basically re-recorded their debut, right? Weren't they originally known as Riverfenix?
I think I've lost track of what we're arguing about haha so let's just let it be. Yes, The National/Vampire Weekend are obviously bigger than the B and C listers of the Warped Tour/Bamboozle crowd.
Early 00s album sales are incomparable to later 00s album sales because the bottom fell out in the middle of the decade. Sales did not accurately represent popularity anymore at some point.
I remember Fat Joe basically went from a platinum album to a gold album to selling 5000 copies of an album within a few years, even though that last album also had a legit hit on it (so it wasn’t for a lack of people interested in Fat Joe songs) and he was still very present in the mainstream rap world. There are many examples like that. Illegal downloads slaughtered the industry at that time.
I love his hits, but never bought an album of his. I was also a teenager obsessed with Limp Bizkit and Boy bands....so...there's that
That’s a whole other thing, rap being a singles genre and all, but in the 90s and early 00s even singles genre albums went (multi)platinum. Also don’t worry more Fat Joe albums will be on my lists
I remember when you could just by the single on a CD. Singles would sell more than a whole album back then.
I remember Nelly arguing with radio DJ that singles make him so much money even when his album flops lol
Haha yes! He wasn't wrong. The only Nelly album I own is Country Grammar. To this day I will listen to it front to back, no skips.
My favourite Nelly album is Suit. I wouldn’t call it a hiddem gem because it was big at the time but it’s not the Nelly album people remember.
