And timely to 1998, lol that putchfork gave Lagwagon - Let’s Talk About Feelings a 9.1

But i agree! Its a perfect pop/skate punk album, a top 20, maybe top 10 of the genre

I listen to the Orgy “Blue Monday” more than the original…

I read that the other day! Currently reading his book, too. Great stuff, and very on point if you’re a part of this community.

I also just hate the idea that having great earworm melodies is a bad thing.

I dont think the complaint against goo goo dolls is that they were catchy or displayed poor musicianship, the complaint is they’re sappy

I like, maybe even love them, but they are def a corny band

And probably an outsized kind of loathing because Iris was so omnipresent (which is insane its an amazing song)

this is the tightest year in a while. still like four albums that could feasibly win

Discogs says Tommy Keene plays on Dizzy Up The Girl as well. Anybody know where?

I fundamentally disagree that sentiment and feeling are corny. I know that’s what we’ve been instructed to believe by aesthetes, but I absolutely, categorically refuse.

I don't know exactly why, but Orgy just really connected with me. Their second album is an all-timer for me. I think a lot of it is the stark blend of dark/gritty music but extremely slick melodies and catchy/memorable songs. It's like the nastiest pop music out there. They completely fell apart on the third album, but those first two are the peak of the genre to me

Vapor Transmission is a SIGNIFICANT step up from Candyass but I guess the zeitgeist had just moved on at that point.

Does anyone disagree with that? The critical position here wasn’t that sentiment and feeling are corny, it’s that these sentiments and feelings are corny:

    Rolling Stone:

    SPIN

    Entertainment: (a B- review!)

And with the Goo Goo Dolls, there's a perfect counterpoint because The Replacements are critically beloved, particularly for their high on sentiment, high on feeling music.

I started my Film and Music class this week and started out playing some New Order. Played the Orgy “Blue Monday” as well.

This drum pattern is how I use to start basically every session just to kind of warm up. It’s so good. I love this song.

I am honestly not sure what the difference is between black/death/etc. I like Deafheaven? Haha

Right but now you're backing behind quoting reviews. The post I quoted was YOU saying they were corny.

Yeah that’s like black metal. Some call it blackgaze. At least the ones I’ve heard.

I am sadly very picky with more extreme types of metal. I like Deafheaven. I like Pallbearer. I assume there are others I'd love, but it's hard to sift through.

I basically have no use for anything where the lyrics are about rot and satan and shit. Haha

I’m not super into metal, but 1998 has a death metal fave of mine:

I’m pretty picky too. I can hardly understand what people are saying so lyrics like that don’t really bother me

Are we allowed to talk about Mechanical Animals or is all MM discourse now frowned upon?

I mean, you're allowed to do anything you want, but I'm not personally going to engage in anything about him because there's no reason to
