Finished Satantango today. I know Bela Tarr wants it watched in one uninterrupted sitting, but I don't have the time or concentration for that, so broke it down into chunks (luckily the film is divided into chapters), over this week. It's not one of those films that fly by, it's a 7 hour film that feels longer than that, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it physically and mentally feels like a slog, which suits the film. This could never be light and breezy and a joy to watch. Some of the shots, held for much longer than conventional films are so beautiful and fascinating, I've never really seen anything like this, at this length. A study in dilapidation, nothing and nobody here is healthy and in a state of good repair, it's all on the brick of rot and collapse. You know its a bad state of affairs when even the prostitutes are out of work. Would love to see this on film, uninterrupted in a cinema. I bet it feels like an entirely different film.
