Despite all the shit they get, they are a band who have only made one record I don’t love, and that’s October. And it’s still good! Just has never grabbed me. Zooropa and Pop definitely took me awhile to come around on, though. Her ‘90s run is so impressive. Going to be talking about her a lot over the next few weeks!
Thanks @Craig Manning for that blurb on A&EA - def bumped it up on my queue for today. It's one of those where I remember 'borrowing' the CD from my Dad's collection when I was like 10-12 and just consuming as much alternative rock music as I possibly could. But at the time I was way more obsessed with Pumpkins, STP, Nirvana, etc to latch on to more than the big hit singles for Counting Crows. Looking forward to spending more time with it.
Goddammit I actually forgot that "Round Here" was the opener of this album. Talk about a timeless song and a strong contender for best 90's album opener.
"Round Here" is only topped by one '90s opener for me, which also happened to be produced by T Bone Burnett.
One of my favorite things about the last 4 weeks of this thread is realizing how prolific Uncle Tupelo was during their run. Been a big Wilco fan since the early 00s, and always liked Son Volt as well. But for whatever reason I never dove into Uncle Tupelo's catalog. I still haven't spent a LOT of time with any of these, but plan to in the spring, which is usually when I really get in the mood for those early Wilco albums.
My username requires me to chime in on this one. 1. Pearl Jam- Vs. 2. Nirvana- In Utero 3. Counting Crows- August and Everything After Can’t say enough about how good Vs. is. Truly a band at the top of their game. First album with drummer Dave Abbruzzese and first with Brendan O’Brien as producer.
Dave Abbruzzese's drum track on "Go" is still just perfection. I love Matt Cameron but even he does not play that drum part with the intensity of Abbruzzese.
My fave alt-rock "one-hit wonder" of '93 is by Porno for Pyros, the short-lived offshoot of Jane's Addiction. For my money, this song is up there with any of the best Jane's tunes. Love the groove and psychedelia of the guitars.
Shout out Ten Summoner’s Tales Rancid Squeeze - Some Fantastic Place New Order - “Regret” Screeching Weasel - Anthem For A New Tomorrow Dick Dale - Tribal Thunder lol Matthew Sweet - Altered Beast Ramones - Acid Eaters Bratmobile - Pottymouth Frank Black - “Hang On To Your Ego” Sun Ra - Space Is The Place
Whoa shoutout for a 90s Squeeze record ! I have not heard this one, how is it? Presumably good since you gave the shout out , but any standout Tracks that hold up to their classic stuff?
The title track is def the song to check out, i think Tilbrook and/or Difford have said it’s their favorite song they’ve written. The album is well regarded by fans, and was pretty successful, it’s worth a few listens (and the later albums really do take a few listens to sink in) I prefer the album before it, Play, but I also listened to that one a toooon this year, might be a recency bias goin on.
