I watched Louis Malle's Damage with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. She does an unbelievably good posh English accent - I've seen her act in English many times, but never playing English. I saw this labelled as an erotic thriller, but the sex scenes here are alien and hostile, they feel like a battle not sex. Bodies flail like contemporary dance, making love in a way that no humans have done before. It reminds me (perhaps bizarrely) of Hisayasu Satō's films, where the sex is just so unerotic and purely physical. Drawing attention to the power and age dynamics here, as well as the semi incestual destructive nature of it. It's intoxicating watching this slow motion disaster, there's never a possibility this will end well for anybody here, and while I didn't expect specifically how wrongly it would go (and the death is a little silly really), it's a doomed sexual affair that doesn't even look alluring.
