What are your top three albums for 1985? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:
    1. Husker Du - New Day Rising

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

    Trusted Prestigious

    1. Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
    2. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
    3. Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising

Hounds of Love is one of Kate Bush's masterpieces, with the opening three track run being probably as good a three song run to open an album that I can think of. The second side, "The Ninth Wave", is progressive and fasinating.

Rain Dogs is Tom Waits mad and deranged blues record, full of bizarre songs and rhythm sections. Difficult and punishing in parts, and certainly not one that works on first listen, but well worth the effort to persist with it.

Bad Moon Rising is Sonic Youth's second album, and sees them much more fully formed, taking their experimental and noisier stuff they were doing beforehand, and massively improving their songwriting. Brave Men Run (In my Family) is one of my all time favourite Sonic Youth songs.

    Honourable mentions;

The Cure - The Head on the Door: Very unlucky not to make the top three, this might be the best Cure record, and opens with one of their most widely covered songs, In Between Days (feels like EVERYBODY has had a go at a cover of this...)

Husker Du - New Day Rising: Husker's follow up to Zen Arcade, and shows them moving even further away from their hardcore punk routes, moving into more accessible alternative rock type music. Flip Your Wig was also released this year, also worth hearing.

The Replacements - Tim: A great Replacements album, again like Husker Du, less punk and more mainstream accessible rock. Bastards of Young might be my favourite Replacements track.

Big Black - Atomizer: Pummelling noise rock with a drum machine, and Steve Albini's dark and nasty lyrics.

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & The Lash: Fantastic traditional Irish folk music, mixed with the chaos of punk, and Shane MacGowan's brilliantly slurred vocals.

Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring: Hugely influential "emo" album and Guy Picciotto's first musical project prior to Fugazi.

The Smiths - Meat is Murder: How good is "How Soon is Now"????

Luther Vandross - The Night I Fell in Love: Classic smooth and just effortlessly charming Luther Vandross album.

Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston: Whitney's debut, and a brilliant bit of soulful pop music, with a big romantic swoop.

Did you end up listening to The Soft Boys in 1980?

(cuz of the Katrina and the Waves connection etc etc)

My birth year! Wow what a long way we have come.

I remember a few years ago the trend of "see what song was #1 on your birthday" and being pleasantly surprised that a good song was #1 on mine:

Not their BEST song - but impressive that this song went to #1 on the pop charts.
