Maybe. I don’t know. There’s a Tarkovsky that I haven’t seen that would surely be number 2 at least if I had.

See it when you can. His later films don't get as much attention but they are great.

I’m sure there are some hidden gems, but this is maybe the weakest year yet for me.

Videodrome wins it with 13 votes. Nothing else was particularly close. Videodrome will move on to the bracket.

Risky Business is on HBO so I have it on as I do other stuff. It is still so wild to me that the Bob Seger dance is what most people attach to the movie, lol. The rest of it is so dark and moody

Risky Business got announced for Criterion today so I’ve been thinking/reading a lot about it. A really special film, unique and set apart from the teen sex comedies pop culture has cast it aside with. It has not really left my mind since I revisited it as an adult.

I remember as a pre-teen I’d often throw on HBO in the living room while my parents sat around the kitchen table and catch glimpses of things I shouldn’t have been watching. Lifeforce aside (holy shit that was a wild one to turn on), I vividly remember turning Risky Business on during the train scene and being hypnotized by it. Knowing I shouldn’t be watching it, having it low enough to not draw attention from the other room, but transfixed by the score and what was happening on the screen. It’s a good one, and I hope it gets some more admirers with the new transfer.

I am watching Variety on the Criterion Channel. Grimy early 80s NYC. Hypnotizing. My kind of film
