I feel you I guess when i think about noise i think about music like Sonic Youth, Big Black, Residents, Birthday Party, whereas MoB is sometimes “noisey” but still 4 chord-ish pop music. It’s a meaningless distinction. Mission of Burma is cool
I listened to Forever Now today, a different kind of noisey music in that it sounds absolutely terrible. I don’t get Todd Rundgren as a producer, some records sound incredible and some, like this one and Next Position Please, sound so bad. Forever Now, like every Psychedelic Furs record, has 4 amazing songs and the rest kinda sucks. But the good songs are oh so good
tbh i kind of just mentally place all the Dischord bands in the DMV since over 50% of them are from there
I don’t think they ever released anything on Dischord, but ya, only as a matter of geography, theyre all in the fam
Mission of Burma being from Boston was a big part of why I wanted to make sure I got to them this week And why I’ll make sure to listen to Del Fuegos and Lyres when we get to the right years.
Late 70’s to early 80’s was a fertile time for Boston punkish music; Mission Of Burma and Lyres, also stuff like DMZ, The Real Kids, Nervous Eaters, The Outlets (feat Rick Barton from dropkick murphys!), The Neighborhoods. some faves:
Maybe less your thing musically, but have you heard This is Boston, Not LA from this year also? Hardcore punk comp, featuring only Boston bands, and was pretty influential in 1982, and still gets name-dropped now in songs and stuff. Not as interesting as Mission of Burma musically, but as a snapshot of a little local scene, it's great.
I couldn’t find the studio version earlier, but I love this chunk of caveman rock: “I’m a degenerate and I like it!”
stuff i got in today: donald ***en - the nightly: loved it rush - signals: fun but not their best sparks - angst in my pants: I truly love this band, having never heard of them prior to the doc, but this wasn't my favorite of theirs todd rundgren - the ever popular tortured artist effect: dudes rock
Y’know that appeals to me because I’m not the biggest hardcore guy so a sampler might be a more appealing quantity of songs per band for me
King Sunny Ade and His African Beats - Juju Music Don’t know anything about Nigerian music and don’t understand a word but who gives a fuck. SO good. Just constant inventive and danceable grooves. The steel guitar is a particularly unique aspect. Donald ***en - The Nightfly Easily better than Gaucho. Lessening the cynicism a little touch pays dividends. And the sound is still impeccable Gregory Isaacs - Night Nurse Catchy, warm, and well-produced Lover’s Rock. Just a pleasant way to pass part of an evening. Aretha Franklin - Jump to It Huge involvement from Luther Vandross who produced, wrote half the album, arranged everything and sang backing vocals on a bunch of tracks. He also brought his frequent collaborator Marcus Miller along, so it sounds incredible. The duet with Levi Stubbs (with the other Tops on backing vocals) is also really cool. @George this would be right up your alley.
Jump To It was a great listen This morning I happened to read a short history of Media Sound, where some of that album was recorded: Mediasound Studios
1. Sparks - Angst In My Pants 2. Michael Jackson - Thriller 3. Descendents - Milo Goes To College Angst In My Pants is one of my favorite albums ever. My favorite Ron lyrics too, some of these songs are kinda sad but so irreverent and funny, and others are just really mischevious Some of my favorite lines: All of Angst In My Pants All of I Predict, which still makes me laugh out loud “Fog matters to you and me But it can't touch Sherlock Holmes Dogs bark and he knows their breed And knows where they went last night Knows their masters too” The “fish, a goldfish!” part in Mickey Mouse Mostly I love the misty breezy mood of Instant Weight Loss buts it’s also a really funny song about having sex “Now I've got a hobby, I collect frozen pizzas Check out my pizzas”
1. The Cure - Pornography 2. XTC - English Settlement 3. The Clash - Combat Rock so so so many good singles and albums with huge singles and some filler from this year. Really want to vow to get back to participating more in this. Every week seems to get away from my listening habits. I even have to catch up 81 and 82 playlists with everyone’s great suggestions. But please please keep em Coming these threads can always be revisited later on!
The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is a hot mess grab bag of an album that I quite enjoyed
sorry for the delay. saw willie last night and didn't get back until late. bruce springsteen's Nebraska takes this one with 16 pts. michael jackson's thriller had 13 and the cure's pornography had 12.
