1. All Things Must Pass - George Harrison 2. Bitches Brew - Miles Davis 3. Led Zeppelin III (cont.) The Man Who Sold The World - David Bowie Abraxas - Santana Fun House - The Stooges Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel Let It Be - The Beatles Live At Leeds - The Who Band Of Gypsys - Jimi Hendrix Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon Sunflower - The Beach Boys McCartney - Paul McCartney Morrison Hotel - The Doors American Beauty - Grateful Dead Good songs from other albums: Layla - Derek & The Dominoes War - Edwin Starr Paranoid - Black Sabbath Les Fleurs - Minnie Riperton American Woman - The Guess Who Summer ‘68 - Pink Floyd Lola - The Kinks
1. Black Sabbath: Paranoid 2. The Velvet Underground: Loaded 3. Joni Mitchell: Ladies of the Canyon Just cut: Paul McCartney: McCartney Led Zeppelin III Other cuts: The Beatles: Let It Be George Harrison: All Things Must Pass The Kinks: Lola vs Powerman Diana Ross: Diana Ross 1 & 2 were easy choices, but I did struggle who to put at 3. I have a lot of love for McCartney I (maybe more than it deserves lol) but there’s better things to come from Paul’s post Beatles output. And Zeppelin III is also great but not my favorite from them, so I had to go with Joni
it is going to be very close haha. might wait to call it until later than usual tomorrow night just to give people a chance. nine albums by my count that could feasibly win this or force a tie
seems safe to call it with no additions today. black sabbath's paranoid takes it (yes!!!!!) with 13 points. bridge over troubled water and bitches brew each had 12, and after the gold rush and let it be each had 10.
First one-two that is somewhat similar to my choices. I don't think I mentioned Paranoid, but probably would have been third after Bitches Brew and Curtis.
Can't believe neither Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Diamond Day nor Nico's Desertshore were mentioned. Both masterpieces (both by women.)
apologies if bumping these older threads gets annoying and/or confusing, but if not.... I'm currently doing my run through of 1970 music. New listens for today were The Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South and Beach Boys - Sunflower. Enjoyed both albums. Felt like in both cases, it's neither band at their absolute peak but plenty of great moments and songs on both albums. and not a new song to me by any means, but maybe never really took a deep listen to this song, it's really truly fantastic:
just listened to Paranoid as well, which last.fm tells me I listened to twice in 2013 but I don't recall now TBH. Either way, it's a pretty damn strong first 4 songs, super consistent. I definitely dug the back half as well, but it wasn't quite immediate. Either way, ya'll are right about the album being a winner.
the verses are kinda a bit too held back for my tastes, but holy shit does this chorus GO OFF. Backed by members of the Wrecking Crew
Idlewild is them finding themselves so they could take off on the next one, but “Revival” is one of their best songs. And fuck yeah “Ooh Child” is perfect
I'll hit you up in 1969 for that one, haha. I just heard this one right now for the first time and the chorus is just so huge I had to post about it.
Allman Brothers Band is a band that I've really found to be pretty damn cool over the last few years. After listening to this today, I've heard Idlewild South, At The Fillmore East and Eat A Peach in full. Are there any full records after that worth getting into? The obvious lineup changes have kinda turned me off looking further into their stuff, and there's so much material too. I'll listen to their debut of course, but anything after Peach?
Brothers and Sisters is actually their most complete record, imo. And I actually have a huge soft spot for Win, Lose or Draw, too
Verrry interesting, obviously I know Ramblin Man, but otherwise I'm not sure I know much. I'll mark those two down as ones to check out now though, without Duane I was hesitant at them being worthwhile moving forward, nice to hear they could overcome the tragedy
There’s no discounting how huge a loss Duane was, but when he passed Dicky Betts stepped into the spotlight and he had a run as an artist vey much worth hearing. His Highway Call album is also really good
Oooh check you out @tomdelonge that's pretty awesome. They seem to shine live so I'll check that out too
