I’m repeating what I’m saying to you in text to have it on record in the thread but that album is so emotionally overwhelming to me. For someone who had such a hard life on the brink of a descent into tragedy to summon up her titanic talent for one last triumph... it gets me choked up just typing it.
My edible is starting to kick in and I thought this was a joke I wasn't getting so you can imagine how feral I am about this existing
Gonna play my “we go way back” card to nag @OhTheWater and @Craig Manning to participate in these threads. Mostly because I value your opinions, whether on stuff you’ve already heard or are just checking out.
Ha, sorry, I’ve been meaning to jump in. Just been a super busy week on my end and I haven’t had as much listening time as I’d like. I’ll try to carve out some time tomorrow to jump on a few recs from this thread.
Plenty of recs in the thread to dabble in. I just have always valued your take on older tunes so I’d be curious what you’d make of Etta or Ray Charles or Dion (I’m with Pat, he seems your speed for sure) or Sammy Davis
Definitely look forward to your responses, either to new listens, or stuff you already dig. Given your love of country, Buck Owens and Patsy Cline seem like safe bets.
I did not know that detail. Congratulations, man! My first nephew was born a few weeks ago and he loves to nap to classical. Here’s hoping yours loves The Spinners or For Dancers Only with you.
It has "Crazy", "I Fall to Pieces" AND "Walkin' After Midnight", so if you like a Patsy single, it's there. Haha
I've listened to: Patsy Cline: Showcase Robert Johnson: King of the Delta Blues Singers Del Shannon: Runaway with Del Shannon Judy Garland: Judy at Carnegie Hall Aretha Franklin: Aretha with the Ray Bryant Combo Oliver Nelson: The Blues and the Abstract Truth Etta James: The Second Time Around The Shadows: The Shadows Max Roach: Percussion Bitter Sweet Stan Getz: Focus I don't think I've ever listened to a full album of Aretha's before, so it was cool to hear how she started, and I definitely plan to keep diving in further. I didn't know about Robert Johnson so King of the Delta Blues Singers was a very cool surprise. Focus and Percussion Bitter Sweet were both a lot of fun and different than anything I've really heard. Judy Garland's album was really good, but I need to listen again when I have less interruptions. Looking forward to spending more time with a lot these My top 3 is probably: 1. Ben E. King: Spanish Harlem 2. Aretha Franklin: Aretha with the Ray Bryant Combo 3. Robert Johnson: King of the Delta Blues Singers
Alright I’ve settled: 1. Judy Garland - Judy at Carnegie Hall 2. Shirley Bassey - Shirley Basey 3. Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out
Lol. We have come to another tie. However, in this one, Robert Johnson had 6 points with one first, second and third place and Judy had 6 points with two first place votes. Any objections to Judy winning it and first place votes being the tiebreaker going forward?
The bracket doesn’t really matter with these, as whichever album picked here is getting knocked out straight away anyway ha. So happy for whatever rule you want here.
no, i know. but we should probably establish something now for when we get to the decades people care about.
