Checked out two other 1960 albums: Joao Gilberto’s second album is as excellent as you expect from him. Straight bossa nova, well-performed A Date with the Everly Brothers meanwhile is FANTASTIC. I’ve never heard a whole album of theirs or had the singles really click so I was knocked on my ass. God, the vocals are just spine-tingling
So both Etta James' At Last and Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain were tied with 6 points each (each got a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place on three lists). Kinda like the movies thread had to do for 1966, vote for which one of the two you prefer, and that will be the one that "wins" and goes on to the bracket at the end. I'll give it 24 hours so just get the vote in by 10:30 tomorrow and then I'll count them up. Gonna go ahead and post the 1961 thread now though
At Last for me - one of my all time favourite albums, though obviously Sketches of Spain is great too.
I overlooked this earlier, but Hank Mobley - Soul Station is so good. With Paul Chambers, Art Blakey and Wynton Kelly. They do a killin version of Irving Berlin’s Remember:
Favorite 1960 single 1. Theme from “A Summer Place” - Percy Faith Other favorite 1960 singles.. At Last! - Etta James I’m Sorry - Brenda Lee Only The Lonely - Roy Orbison Spanish Harlem - Ben E King The Twist - Chubby Checker El Paso - Marty Robbins Georgia On My Mind - Ray Charles Notable mention: Bernard Hermann’s film score for Psycho Troll mention: Brian Hyland’s Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini
I honestly find “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” pretty fun, even not trolling. Not gonna put it on any mixtapes or anything but it makes me smile in the summer
They were playing Sketches of Spain in a record store I went to this weekend and as someone typically very unfamiliar with jazz, it was kind of fun that I could recognize it from listening like two days before thanks to this thread.
started a few weeks ago on a series on riffs and quite enjoyed one of the tracks from this year that I found but didn't find when we posted these threads The Greatest Guitar Riff Ever: 1960
